How many still use cd-player?

Posted by: ljudpuff on 05 April 2017

During a time I have tested both the dragonfly and chord mojo from my MacBook Pro to my Nait 5i. Okay, everything sounds good, its really simple to switch between album, and you can play hi res.  But today I played a few CDs in my old beloved cd5i that has been idle for a while, and where really impressed (again) how good this combo is!

Really love the synergy they create! Im now seriously thinking of just stick to simple plug and play cd replay.

Just a little curious, am I crazy? how many here use CD player as their main source these days?

I don't, not for nine years.

Sometimes I wish I did. I can count on one hand the number of times in 19 years a tried to play a CD and it didn't work for some reason. I wish I could say the same thing for streaming.

I think CD is a great format.  Almost indestructible, simple to use.  Okay some of the cheaper end early players weren't the last word in hi-fidelity but some great players out there.

Lindsay

I still use CD as my main source. I love the sound of the CDX2. I have no doubt that streaming will be a thing in our house as the kids grow up. But for now, CDs still do it for me

Agree with Lindsay on the format.

I enjoy using my CD player.  It shares source duties with my tuner.  Upgraded to a CDX2.2 a few years ago.  Had the CD5i and CD5x previously.  All good players.

Yep, use my CDX2, NDX into Hugo, and NAT05 as my main sources

CD Player user here.

I streamed internet radio and my ripped CDs for about four years but was never entirely happy with the sound and the reliability of the user interfaces.

I still use CD players - sometimes you have a disc in the hand you just want too hear. No faff. No need for networks or computers or i devices. Just pop in the disc and press play.  And of course CD players have their own particular characters. The old Philips chip players (particularly the Naim ones) have a very distinct character that you just don't find with modern DACs - not 'accurate' or neutral but boy can they be great fun!

CDS3. It would be your main source too if you had one!

Another CDS3 here too.

Can't bring myself to replace my CDS3. All my CDs are ripped to NAS and I now rip as I buy but I really enjoy the sound of the source. I planned to get an NDS but it can wait. For what? I don't know. When it dies perhaps but second hand players are really cheap. I might just bag one as a back up.

I'm still very much a CD man. My CD source is a bit complicated at four boxes but I've yet to hear a digital set up that betters it.

Nope - rip and stream only here. My network is up 24/7 and no faff involved. I will never own a CD player again thankfully. Sound quality and ease of access to music is now in a different (higher!) league.

Although I have a CDS3, I have to say it rarely plays nowadays as streaming off tidal is so much easier.

Reluctant to sell it though..

CDS3 here too, but it is seriously underused since I got an LP12...

I love my CDS3/555 PS DR. My LP-12 sounds better, esp. with the Tranquillity, but it's hard to beat the convenience of CD. Streaming might be a possibility if I listened for hours at a time, but I don't.

This is the golden age of CD acquisition. I can find a lightly-used-to-new copy of just about anything I want for 4-5 dollars and another 4 for shipping. Carpe discem!

yep, CD all the way for me, and has been since the early 80s, looking in my rather large cd collection, and browsing through till i find what i want, and coming across other cds that i had forgot i had, and getting excited, its a blast sitting back with the cd case in one hand looking for my favourite tracks, remote in the other, my son thinks its a little old hat, he thinks he's all up to date with his tec, till i put  Vide Cor Meum on, anyway he never experienced the Hacienda, i did. Enjoy CDs, they will be around along time yet.

It broke my heart to see my CD5 sitting idle in the rack so I sold it 5 years ago to someone who still holds it in high regard.

I ripped my whole CD collection to my HDX. I now only listen to vinyl and the rips, partly for the sound quality, the HDX outperforms the CD5X by a long way, and partly because it saves moving the cat when I go to change a CD. (Vinyl for the evenings she doesn't sit on me.) The CD player is there because I may sell the HDX when my NDX arrives, and I want something to play CDs friends bring round.

I just got a new CD player 3 months back - P S Audio Direcstream Music Player

Sounds heavenly when paired with P S Audio's Direct Stream DAC over i2s connector. Plays SACD too with direct DSD going to the DAC. And experience by itself.

I got a CDX2.2 which I play with nDac for more Rock kind of music.

(Also I got Uniti Core which I use as a ripper and storage with Roon to Direct Stream Dac.)

I placed a CD in my cd555, pressed play and wondered why you would want to use anything else?

CD still has so much to offer

I do suspect that if my much lamented Micromega Trio hadn't given up the ghost (or if I could have found anyone who could repair her), I'd still be listening to CDs. But my circumstances at that time were such that I was only at the house with the main hifi rig maybe one evening every month, so it wasn't worth getting a high end replacement, so I got a CD5X which is a good player, and gave me access to my CDs, but sonically was blown away by the Roksan TMS for vinyl, and later when circumstances changed and I was in the house full time, the HDX that arrived. With a top class CD player, the little discs are still wonderful.

Once I ripped all my CDs the CDS3 was not used. I sold it while I could still get a reasonable return. I still buy a silly amount of CDs however, great format, I just heard better replay with ripping and streaming, not to mention convenience.

Dumped CD about 7 years ago, i just use RIP's from my vortexbox server.
