Nait 5Si

Posted by: Berty Bass on 07 April 2017

Bought a Nait 5Si recently along with a pair of Kudos X2s and have been delighted with the improvement over my previous Rega Mira (Mk1) and R3's.  My dealer mentioned that the power switch is located at the rear of the Nait 5Si to discourage users from turning it off.  Whilst I don't doubt him is it really the case that it performs better if left permanently powered up?  Obviously I turn the volume down or mute the speakers, and the display off when not in use.  Thanks.

Why not try for yourself

Let it be on one week

Turn the thing off next week and turn on half an hour before listening, see if you notice

This question comes up regularly, and the answer is always 'leave it switched on' from 90% of people and 'it makes no difference if you turn it off' from the rest. Do a forum search and you will see.

Okay - thanks.

Great to hear it's a good amp for you with the Kudos. Which sources do you have?

Hi there, sources are a Rega P5 with the Groove Tracer subplatter upgrade and power supply, with an Ortofon 2M Black cartridge.  I've also got a Rega Apollo CD player, and we put the TV through it too.  I'm really enjoying it and it's been great pulling out older LP's I've not spun for a while for listening.  It was my 40-years old copy of the Beatles' 'White Album' yesterday, bought when I was about 13 years old.  Great stuff, although I'm thinking a new copy may be overdue.

I might add that I also contacted Naim with regard to the powering off question, whose response was thus: "All our units are intended to be left permanently powered for optimum sound quality – obviously you can turn the unit off if you wish".

So there you have it - the definitive response should anyone be similarly exercised as myself in future.

I wouldn't be surprised if Phil and colleagues had an auto-text for these regular powering-off-or-not questions.

I'm suffering from Forum Newcomer's Syndrome - it hasn't yet dawned on me that the same question may have been asked by hundreds of members on multiple occasions over many preceding years!
