High resolution download issue
Posted by: ljudpuff on 09 April 2017
I was trying to buy some hi res album, has never done it before so I got a little surprised when I was denied to buy it. The reason: apparently I was living in the wrong place (Sweden) ??? Tested some different sites , all with the same message ... What's the point of buying streamers and DACs that can handle hi res files when you can't buy them ??
Makes no sense at all, but unfortunately suppliers seem to do it, I assume to do with licencing, though I don't understand what difference it makes.
in some cases you may be able to get around it by creating an account with an address in the country of source, as long as they accept a creditcard registered to your address as a separate address, or paypal likewise. Whether you can do that may depend on whether they get location data from your address or, most likely your internet provider's IP address, the latter making it more difficultbto circumvent. If you try and there is no obvious reason why it doesn't work with a supplier who has already refused you, check to see if there's a cookie recognising you or try a different computer before giving up.
It's a legal copyright limitation issue. Unfortunately copyright laws vary between legislatures and companies also distinguish between countries for commercial rights reasons; and the result is a complete mess. Also the UK leaving the EU will only make it worse for us: Currently we can rely on EU copyright legislation, so even if a company decides not to sell to us locally, we can legitimately buy through any other European country.
There's technically nothing stopping you from using Hi-Res files, but there may be no organisation that's prepared to supply them into your country's jurisdiction.
Thanks for the information!
To me this is like a big joke! I offer my money to buy music legal and support the artist, but no, you live in the wrong place!? Will order a CD instead, it has always worked.
There are two options you have.....
1. Use an IP address masking solution.
2. Use pro-studio master with an fake us address
or final option, sent an email to f.i. Qobuz support and ask them if they can help you.
HD Tracks UK is unblocked - at least from Poland. Currently EU legislation forbids geo-blocking.

Geo blocking, or more correctly termed, geo location services are not at all illegal in the EU. The distribution of streamed audio visual media over IP is however subject to various conditions. Further each country can block content by imposing requirements on ISPs that specific IP addresses are blocked, and this is done on a country by county basis but is genereally for different reasons and relates to security and legality issues.
The issue the OP is experiencing is not a copyright issue per se but a distribution licensing issue. Currently online audio visual media streaming in the EU and beyond typically requires licensing agreement for each country and with some sport such as in the UK within country region.
There is proposed new EU legislation that is expected in 2018 that will apparently simplify the licensing process and essentially potentially make it bloc wide once distribution licensing has been agreed.
