Powerline In Nait XS System

Posted by: Hanumike on 10 April 2017

Hi all

I have a basic XS system CD5, XS2 with Flatcap XS feeding both pieces of kit all connected to unswitched sockets on a dedicated supply, I have acquired a single Powerline and wondered what the general consensus of opinion is on what bow would benefit most ( and hopefully give the greatest sonic improvement) with the addition of a Powerline ?

I know the usual response would be try it on all and see for your self but I struggle connecting up kit due to a disability and thought I'd seek the help of the forum before I take the plunge.

Thanks for any advise

I have mine on the XS-2.

I would think that using the single powerline on the NaitXS2 would be the biggest improvement.

Putting it on the Flatcap could be an option, as it'll share its effect on both units, but perhaps only marginally as inside this box there is only a small handful of circuitry components.

Putting it on the CD5 could be an option, as most here would say source first. But since you already have a dedicated supply on unstitched sockets it should be getting what it needs to get the best out of it.

Putting it on the NaitXS2 however could be your option. Since inside this box the complexity of circuit components would benefit from that extra coupling you would get from your mains connected with the Powerline.

You might also want to consider ease of cable dressing when you instal the Powerline. It is designed to reduce microphonics by having loose, mechanically decoupled connections at both ends, and these should be able to hang reasonably freely without tight bends that could put a side load on either of the plugs, which is easier in some locations than others.

When I had one powerline I tried it everwhere, most musical was on the CD5x rather than its flatcap, This wasn't my expectation.

I had a very similar system for years with a single PL and tried it variously throughout. As a general rule of thumb I'd say apply the PL to the largest transformer - the Nait XS. The source-first rule doesn't really apply at this level of kit, IME.

Takes all kinds - I found the biggest improvement on the flatcap.

With the predecessor 5x series the powerlines worked best overall with source first (flatcap or cd).  I would agree that the biggest individual effect is on the amp;  it's just that if you put it there the rest of the system won't be able to keep up.

Just try it in all positions and see which you like best.

Thanks for the advice guys, after a lot of deliberation and a chat with my dealer I've put the Powerline on the XS 2 and after some extended listening over the weekend I think that's where it's stopping, better defined base and a more insightful sound stage that will do for me.

I think I might have the Powerline bug so that's 2 more required when funds are available !!

Don't dismiss the Powerline lite. Worth trying before committing to another two full fat Powerlines. (If you are in the UK that is...)
