555ps upgrade to 555ps dr
Posted by: Richieroo on 13 April 2017
Hi I currently have a 555ps with my 272 ..... which made a fantastic difference .... the power supply is fairly elderly - I was wondering if anybody had upgraded to dr ..... and if this gave a sonic improvement....
Usual cliches apply ............ inky blackness, veils lifted, don't audition unless you're ready to spend some money, etc.
Erm ............ it's a bit good. ![]()
A big step up.
More power, more precise, voices are more stable, timbre is more realistic and above all - the background, which is much much darker.
I know it's going to have to happen..... later this year....doh

I got my N272/555PS-DR/300DR and I've auditioned awhile ago a 272/555PS/250DR against the XPS-DR...I said to myself buy another toy or 555PS-DR
I changed an XPS-DR for a 555-DR (so not answering your question at all!), but it took me some time to realise what the 555 added (or is that took away?).
if you're running a 555 already you'll be getting most of the goodness, but the DR is commonly regarded as a welcome improvement.
you know you have to...
I took the jump. My PS was out of the house for 4 weeks, then there was the burn-in time, which may still be ongoing. With so much time lag between "before" and "after", I can't confidently say it's much better, and I raise a mental eyebrow at people who say they can.
A 555PS which needs servicing would probably benefit more from the servicing than from the DR mod with no service. Just my opinion.
They could still build to order at least

not to get off topic but a 500 series pre-amp streamer or N372 would be a nice piece of gear which I believe would do quite well with sales... wishful thinking
Even if you believe in the proposition that adding a power supply can make a difference, it is difficult to appreciate just how much of a difference until you hear it for yourself.
From a refurbished Olive HiCap on my CD5 through to adding a second 555PS-DR to my NDS, the effect has never failed to bring joy. The first 555PS (on the DAC) was a big jump in faith (although no risk because I wasn’t buying blind) but despite the colossal price the result was worth every penny.
And so it was with the DR upgrades. You think it probably will improve matters somehow, although you don’t quite know how because it sounds so good already, and the result is more than you could have imagined. To me the DR adds realism which I didn’t know the music lacked. It does more besides, but it’s the believable, visceral, organic, reach-out-and-touch texture that I like the most. More music, less HiFi.
I'd take a 500 level pre/streamer home for a listen in a heartbeat. Particularly if it had a full range volume control. Although it would have to sound good. And probably would.
