DLNA UPNP server

Posted by: dikkiedirk on 14 April 2017

I was wondering if anyone of you is running Asset UPNP server and on which hardware you are using it. Currently I have Asset UPNP running on my unraid server, that also holds my movie backups and other stuff, but I like to use a dedicated music-only NAS like a QNAP. Is any of you using Asset on a Qnap NAS?

I am.

Me too!

Is Asset UPNP the only way to go, or are there alternatives worth considering if a don't get such a fast and powerfull NAS life the 453? Will Asset also work on a Qnap with Arm processor?

QNAP HS-251 is all you need. Processing power is not that critical for streaming music. What helps is running a dedicated music-only-NAS, with all other processes disabled on it.

As to which UPnP software: I use either Minimiserver (as a backup) or stream via my UnitiServe SSD.

Asset R5.1 running on a headless RaspberryPi 2 with a NFS mount back to ReadyNAS Ultra2+ unit. The RPi2 is running on a secondary switch just serving NDS, in Living Room and transcodes PCM formats to WAV within this final 'metre'. The NAS is running in the study, with separate NAS units for backup.

Files are served perfectly, with album artwork, plus store/forward in the switch & buffering in the NFS mount & in the transcoding reducing any IP packet communications issues.

I run ASSET on a QNAP 251.  Backup is a Synology nas that can run Minimserver, but Asset is my first choice.

qnap 210 with dbpower runs like a dream .very quiet too

Currently run Asset on a RPi2 tucked away out of site in my study.. the RPi mounts my various NASs as appropriate to aggregate my media sources over the LAN. Totally quiet and runs fairly cool, and powered by low power USB, and all in the size of a kitchen box of matches. I also run MinimServer this way too.

I've had Asset R5.1 running on 3 different QNAP servers so far TS421 (ARM) and TS451 & TS653 {Intel) and it runs fine on all three.

Do you notice any performance difference between those Nas's eunning Asset. Does Asset update automatically when new songs are added? How do you rip your CD's, and then add them to your NAS? Or do you buy music from HDtracks or others? I might opt for a low performance TS-412 which I can get cheap or RPi. There now seems to be an all in one Asset package for all Qnap Nas's.

I'm running Asset UPnP R5.1 on a dedicated Mac Mini (it was already in stock and unused), located in a different room but noiseless and hard wired to the router. Never tried anything else.

CDs ripped with dBpoweramp CD Ripper R16. As fas as I recall Asset UPnP automatically Rescans the Library but most of my music is streamed so I don't add many new CDs these days.

Asset updates very quickly; it seems to catalog new albums even before the entire transfer is finished!

I am. I've also shared said NAS, a TS-470, with DVD rips sent to a KODI box on the network. But the Asset NAS stands alone now on a mirrored pair (backed up to PC HDD and USB HDD). The other mirrored pair have nothing running on them and just store data.

It's never given me the slightest bit of bother. Or sounded different.

Glad to hear there is no need to spend 3000 Euros on a Untiserve SSD.

i recommend everybody to read a review by head hifi, comparing 5 nas/server as vortex box, total dac server, auralnic, cad cat audio.  There is still a possibility of improvement on common nas. Melco is an example.

When we bought our HDX it was one of few options available and did it all. There were no Naim streamers at the time. Few from any anyone. Eight or so years on I wouldn't dream of going to that kind of expense or buying a US. It isn't justified for me. That's a lot of money which could be deployed elsewhere. But a US, or whatever it is called now, will still be the answer to lots of people's dreams. Horses for courses, each to our own, and all that. The important thing is that we have choice. We should never lean towards a no choice model.

No real difference streaming between the NAS drives using Asset UpnP. And yes, there is now only one Asset qpkg package for QNAP NAS drives. The only performance difference I have between the TS421 and the other NAS drives is in copying files over the network where the TS421 is slower (about 30Mb/sec) compared to the others (100 to 120Mb/sec) which is down to their increased RAM/higher spec. Am using dBpoweramp v14 for ripping CDs although I also download HR files,
