A cheap way for iOS users to use BubbleUPnP,

Posted by: ChrisByrd on 15 April 2017

A certain large online retailer has an Easter offer on at the moment - the 7 inch Fire Tablet reduced to £35.  As well as being a not bad ereader, the Fire runs BubbleUPnP beautifully (if you've got BubbleUPnP server running, in my case on a MacBook Pro, with JRiver as the DLNA server - streaming to an SU).  The app can now be downloaded from the Kindle App Store, so installation is easy, and (so far) it knocks the socks off the Lumin and Kazoo apps.  The 7 inch tablet is also a nice compromise in size between my iPhone and iPad.

I'm 67 today, and this has to be the best value birthday present I've ever had

Thanks for the heads-up on this. I might give it a go myself.

I love the Kazoo app for Windows PC (the best of all the apps I have used) which I use with my Klimax DS/1, but I have never liked the Lumin (or for that matter the very similar Kazoo) for IOS app and the way it forces users to continually construct playlists rather than simply play selected albums or tracks. I currently use Lumin on my microRendu/Hugo which has replaced the better (in my opinion) Naim app that I formerly used with my old Naim streamer.

The BubbleUPnP app may well be worth considering, since I have BubbleUPnP running on my microRendu.

There's a free (adverts + some restrictions) version of the BubbleUPnP app, but after a few hours use I decided to pay the £2.99 for a licence.

Another thing, with my SU set as an OpenHome renderer, gapless playback is faultless.

Happy birthday! I tend to use Kazoo both for controlling my main replay system and a Chromecast Audio in the kitchen that gets data from another server. But BubbleUPnP is indeed very capable and versatile. Having a local renderer, it is very convenient for testing your wireless connections or for occasional headphone listening.

I regularly use Kazoo. I have tried Lumin for a while but did not like the UI. With Kazoo, I never use playlists and I actually never had the impression that I was forced to build such lists: you can play an album or a track by just tapping it. Perhaps you have a setup problem?

Thanks for this, but my understanding was that the Amazon version of Android differed considerably from the normal type & wouldn't run BubbleuPnP, which is why I bought a cheapo ( but not so goodo) Acer tablet thing.

Edit - Ordered!

[@mention:1566878603998391] I think this is something that changed recently, as I was able to download the app directly from the Amazon App Store.  I could never be bothered with the procedure to side load from the Play store to get round Amazon's modified version of Android.

I do really like Kazoo, but found that it constantly lost the connection to my SU (as did Lumin).  It could be a JRiver or iOS thIng as I get the same problem with the Naim app.  Early days, but so far BubbleUPnP has been rock solid.

HI nbpf,

Thanks for this. It has actually been some time since I last used a Linn iPad based app on my main system, but you are right. You can indeed play the Music directly without resorting to playlists, so Kazoo on the iPad could be an option for me. I still much prefer the Kazoo for Windows application though, and so will continue to use that in my main system (KDS/1).

I use Lumin on my second system (Sonore microRendu/Hugo DAC) because Linn Kazoo (despite being in theory open source) simply doesn't work with the microRendu, and I still haven't found a way to avoid having to use 'playlists' with the Lumin app. When I first purchased the microRendu, I spent a good few days trying to get it to work (using Kazoo). It was only when I carried out some further research that I found  out that it simply doesn't work. When I switched to Lumin, I managed to get the microRendu to work more or less flawlessly straight away.

For those running Lumin or Kazoo for a microRendu, I highly suggest paying for iPeng - it's a much better UI than both of those, and Naim could take a few tips from it for their own streaming software. Unfortunately not Open Home so can't run a Naim streamer like Bubble.
