20 Most Enduring Regularly Played Pieces

Posted by: Innocent Bystander on 16 April 2017

On the thread Which Gives Most Pleasure, Black Box Upgrades Or Expanding Your Music Collection a few people have indicated that they have a core of music they listen to repeatedly: a couple of people have said 1-20 albums, for me it is probably 20-40.

So if this applies to you – and some people mentioning this on the other thread are under the impression it might not be common - what are your 20  real core enduring regularly plays? I am meaning here the enduring ones that you invariably play very frequently, such that give or take just one or two it would be certain to be the same list in a year’s time – i.e. ignoring the inevitable repeated playings of some new good piece for a while after you have added it to your collection, and ignoring any current flavour of the month that you might have, perhaps through current mood or a recent ’rediscovery’ of something in your collection.

I have deliberately suggested being rigid and limiting the list to 20 items – which for me is forcing me to think carefully which ones I really do play often, which is not necessarily the same as if I were picking 20 ‘desert island disks’ as the only music I would be able to play: some music is in my head and never needs to be played again, though I wouldn’t want to be without the capability of so doing, while other music I just seem to keep playing.  And I am finding it difficult as there is about double this number that are frequently played, but I have forced myself to limit it.

Mine are, in alphabetical order because there isn't a play preference order::

A good thread and I guess the lack of response is down to the time it takes to assemble such a list...

For me this is a current TOP 20 and my criteria is that the album has been in my top 20 since I've owned it and no less than a year. Some have had less plays and in the last 2-3 years my addiction for new music has been re-ignited to what it was between the age of 16 to about 32. The advent of children left less free cash and time to indulge my passion although during that time, live music was a good way of getting some time away from the children with my wife, and we saw a good deal...

That was hard, Thinking about the ones that didn't quite make the cut, I suspect my core listening runs to 40-50 albums. I've included one song rather than album because it has immense personal meaning, and is probably the only song I play regularly as a song rather than on an album. These 20 have been played regularly for many years, I have most on both vinyl and CD (and thus now ripped.).

Bach - St Matthew Passion - Harnoncourt
Bach - Well Tempered Clavier - Angela Hewitt
Bach - Cello Suites - Rostropovich (replacing Hewitt's Goldberg just before I hit post)
The Band - The Last Waltz
Beatles - Abbey Road
Beethoven String Quartet No. 16 Op. 135, Alban Berg Quartet (earlier studio recording)
Beethoven Symphony No. 7 - Harnoncourt
Bob Dylan - the Freewhellin' Bob Dylan
Fairport Convention - Meet on the Ledge (any of several live recordings)
Fairport Convention - Liege and Lief
Led Zeppelin IV
Tom Lehrer - Complete Recordings
Joni Mitchell - Hejira
Joni Mitchell - For the Roses
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Schubert - Hyperion Lieder Edition - Brigitte Fassbaender
Schubert Quintet D.965 - Alban Berg Quartet and Heinrich Schiff
Shakti - A Handful of Beauty
Sibelius/Tchakiovsky Viking Concertos - Viktoria Mullova
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks

Interesting post. It will require some thinking though as it would be too much choice to get to the top 20. At least e.s.t., Led Zeppelin, Keith Jarrett, Vivaldi,.....

will land and on the list...

I had started a similar thread a few months ago, which hadn't attracted any replies after a couple of days so I deleted it. But it's interesting the way you've framed it here. I would be interested to know from those who have gone fully digital how the lists presented here compare with those available from the Naim app or n-Serve app which actually generate a true list of the most frequently played albums. That of course doesn't include albums which are owned only on vinyl, nor does it include those which you think might be your most frequently played, but which statistically are proven not to be so.

Perhaps those who've already submitted their top 20 from memory should check what the Naim app reveals to be the truth. Likewise, if you've not yet submitted your list, try to do it from memory first, then check with the app. The truth will out!

I was intrigued by your question Clive. At least I'm sort of consistent with some of the artists

Adam, how do you get the image above. My app does not appear to have an option for last played?

nearest I can find is on the n serve app which offers both last played and most played, but cannot see these options on the new app for the naim core?

I used the 'Last Played' view - second row, third from the left.

And it's not accurate - some of the albums I played recently are not shown...

I see. Yes I can get this if I use app to look at a room where muso or Qb is used, it gives use in that area. If I use app to look at the core the there is more such option for the music streamer

In my case 'Sitting Room' is a network name for my NDX.

Posted on: 17 April 2017 by Cbr600

Ok, same as me with the HDX then, except for HDX I use the older n serve app

Adam, you should be looking at the 'Top 20' option to compare with what you have listed. That is the last icon on the second row. This should give the true picture based on your digital music choices at least.

I'm rather embarrassed to find that my true most played disc is the Naim Christmas freebie download from a few years back, 'The Best of British'! But that's basically because of the track entitled 'First Song', which is most enjoyable.

In my case neither view is correct. I use 4 streamers at home, and it turns out the view I posted is just one of them.
It's only when I go to the n-Serve app do I get a full picture of what has been 'served'.
