Fake powerlines
Posted by: ThatsNotMyNaim on 20 April 2017
Hi guys,
Does anyone know if there any dodgy Powerlines in circulation
I received one today from used market which looks different and shaped slightly differently to my original bought from online retailer.
The new arrival has a different Naim logo the bottom IEC end. No line under Naim.
I can't work out how to attach a pic?
Cheers
Adam
That sounds distinctly dodgy to me. I am not aware of any design changes to the Powerline. I would certainly check this out with Naim or a Naim dealer before you put it into use.
Just found this one on an auction site. Can't see a line under Naim on this iec either
Different

That's exactky it Finkfan.
The Naim logo had changed but inconsistent between plug head and IEC exactly like your photo.
I've emailed Naim.
Cheers
Yes, it looks wrong to me and I can't believe Naim would get their own logo wrong.
What I can't understand is why go to the cost and risk of creating a fake, even though the margin will be significant, when the volumes will inevitably be small.
A comment from someone at Naim would be helpful here.
I suppose it could be a prototype, but it seems odd that the seller now has another one for sale. And they have no feedback. And their description is a bit brief. As suggested, have a word with Naim.
Hi,
the IEC plug on my new (2+ month) Powerline, bought from my local dealer, looks exactly like the one in finkfans first picture. The wall plug is a Furutech Schuko, obviously without a Naim logo.
I do agree with Nigel, a statement from someone at Naim or perhaps a trade member would be really helpful.
My most recent Powerline is like that - the logo is open at the bottom, doubtless to fall in line with the recent logo update (see top left corner of this page), whereas the earlier Powerlines had the enclosed logo. Mine came straight from the factory, so definitely not a fake.
Ah, that is reassuring.
Thanks Richard for clearing this up.
I have 3. The latest one I got a month ago with a brand new 552. It's different than my older two which I got second hand. It doesn't have the line underneath Naim on the iec either.
Basically I back up Richard's comment
Thanks Richard,
When i tried to connect it, it was really stiff and wouldn't go in properly like my older one. So I started looking at the cable and thinking; "Uh oh".
The weird thing is my old one plugged into my Innuos Zenith sounds softer and warmer.
The new one plugged into my XS2.
If I swap this around the sound goes brighter.
Maybe it needs more time.
Did anyone notice that the seller Finkfan identified claimed that s/he was from Salisbury??!!
Yeah, spotted that.

Powerlines fallen off the lorry at Naim? Or a dodgy vendor who want to imply a conncetion with Naim to appear more trustworthy?

Adam, in your OP you also mentioned that the PL you received was a slightly different shape. You might want to check for any other apparent differences to be on the safe side.

The shapenis ever-so-slightly more bulbous and rounded at the bottom of the grey part of the IEC. More bevel. The old one is flatter and square. Talking millimetre here though.
Both very solid build. The new one is slightly brighter silver too. The old a bit duller.
Not a great deal of difference but a different mould spec I would say.

If the build quality is solid than it is probably fine - a dead giveaway with a fake.
I was a bit surprised each of your PLs sounded so different. I guess they need to run in like any other cable.
