NAC-N172XS + NAP 155XS - Speaker advice ?
Posted by: SeanBD on 23 April 2017
Hi ,
I am new to the world of NAIM, but have recently acquired NAC-N172XS + NAP 155XS and would appreciate some advice on speakers. I'm sure this has been a massive topic, but there's so much information on the forum that I'm desperately confused.I've also inherited a CD5 and Flatcap XS.
I'd prefer to not go for floor standers as I find them a bit dominating in a smaller room and had been considering the focal aria 906 ?
I'd rather buy new and have a budget of up to £1000. Many thanks for any advice and sorry to be a bore!
Hi I happen to think the Russel K Red 50 speakers sound pretty impressive with the 155xs and are relatively compact standmounts. They are around 975 pounds, so within your budget, but you will need stands of course.
Thanks for the info - I'll take a look see ! Not heard of them before.
Worth considering the Proac Tablette 10. Ideal for smaller rooms and also designed to work close to a wall so they'll be nice and discrete too.

Thanks, not the 1st time that these have been mentioned when I was doing some research !
Those ProAcs do seem a very attractive option, and being sealed can be a big benefit. Another to consider may be the ATC 7, though they may like a bit more power. Then there's the Neat Motive SX3, which costs about £1,150. A lot of shops sell speakers exdem so you can get a useful saving. My favourite small speaker was the PMC twenty.21 but it's been superseded by the twenty5.21 at a much higher price. There may be a few exdem twenty.21s around still.

Agree with the recommendation for the RK50, heard them at the recent Bristol show, very impressive for their price bracket..
Another suggestion is the Latest Revel bookshelf speaker, again demonstrated at the Bristol show, similar price but again very very impressive

Should have mentioned the Revels are the M106, in my opinion they are seriously underpriced.
Looks like the M106 is about £1900 in the UK - bit out of my price range :-(

Apologies, I should have said M16, they are about 1k or just under.

You have made the right choice to go with small speakers. The setup of the speakers is governed by the size of the room and this is most critical, the speaker-room interface. To cut to the chase, small speakers will work wonders in small spaces, most often outperforming larger speakers in the same setup.
As for the options, there are a handful in your price range though most people will recommend the ones that they like or own. I have been investigating on small monitors lately and the ones that interest me are the ATC SCM 11/19 and Proac Tablette 10. There are more alternatives in the price range of up to £1000 though the ATC and Proac seem to be quite popular with Naim owners as there are few who use Naim amps to drive these speakers with success. Both will work close to wall boundaries and the Tablette 10s can be placed right up against the wall being a sealed box. One advantage of the Tablette 10s is they are easier to drive when compared to the ATC (especially with NAP 155XS). Having said that, at the end of the day it's the sound that counts.
If you are into looks, another consideration is the Proac Tablette 10s come in ebony finish which is particularly striking. FWIW I am considering the Tablette 10s myself, sometime closer to the end of the year. The Tablette 10s cost £999 in standard finishes, just slightly more for the premium ebony and rosewood.
Hi. All the speakers suggested should be on your audition list, but don't forget about your original idea - the Focal Aria 906. Really nice speakers for the price, and if matched propperly.
I have the same pre/power and very happily use Proac Studio 118s
