Naim Forum App

Posted by: Massimo Bertola on 24 April 2017

Dear Naim,

my wife, Silvia, says she's amazed at the absence of an app for smartphones to go to the forum directly. She's not a member, but I am, so I have been thinking about it.

When the new forum format came out many criticized it , but I didn't, realizing it was excellent for smartphones (and writing so). So, why not?

Thanks,

Max (on behalf of Silvia).

I'm sure there used to be a HoopLa app for the forum. I never used it, but I seem to recall that it was withdrawn for some reason.

There was a dedicated App.  However some time ago Hoop La decided to update the site so you didn't need to have a dedicated App for best usability on mobile devices.

I'm not sure what an app would do that you can't do already.

+1 ... I've never seen the advantage of an app over a well developed "mobile" website ... essentially the apps just package the same information into a "web" format anyway.  The only real advantage is if the forum allows for uploads which may be handled better by an app.

Apps are very old fashioned and it costs a lot of effort to build them for the various platforms therefore imposing extra cost. It is far more efficient to think about responsive design and cater for the various platforms (phone / tablet / pc / iOS / Android etc) in one code base - which is preferably HTML5 and some related standards.

Ardbeg, yes, I always thought it a shame that AJAX never quite got enough traction, but HTML5 goes some way to addressing the limitations of HTML & browsers.
