sospensione mid range NBL

Posted by: EVAR on 29 April 2017

Good evening Excuse my English I turn to NBL holders I noticed that where the midrange resides, the wooden suspension extends 4mm from the floor of the cabinet. Is it normal or is the weight of the midrange pushing it upwards? You are aware of someone who can restore it, perhaps in Italy (max Bertola)

If I understand correctly, you're talking about the rear of the speaker where the transit screws are fitted when you need to move the speaker?
This is how mine looks:

No is not the back of the diffuser but in front of where the midrange is. Unfortunately I can not post the picture

Even if the photo is not in the correct position you can understand what I mean

The nested box should pretty much have an even gap all around it when viewing from the front. If not, the spike may have come out of the cup at the front of the nested box. There is one spike at the front and two at the back that are on a leaf spring type of arrangement. You can view the front spike bey carefully removing the tweeter and seeing if the spike is in the cup. Im assuming you are talking about the gap around the nested box as I can't see the photos.

Also the nested box should wobble left and right very freely if all is well.

Good morning I'm sorry you can not see the photos. What I intend is: Front panel where the midrange is screwed are cuts that make the suspension, at this point a part of the panel is not wire but protrudes from mm4

That sounds more like the hf unit from your discription. Mine were sagging a bit but the mounting plate can be carefully flattened, it's all you can do as I was told there's none left. The screws should just be tight enough to hold it in place without crushing the rubber O rings too much, unlike the mid range unit which is torqued to 5.4 Nm ( if I remember correctly). The bass units in the sides shouldn't be touched.

OK Evar, I think you are talking about the cut outs in the wood baffle that decouple the mid range driver, or make it suspended as you say. I have DBL's and I know that over time the wood has expanded slightly, probably due to moisture or drying out and the cut out is not exactly flat, sort of springing out the timber a bit. I have NBL's also and this has not happened on them but unless the timber has snapped or broken, I think the cut out will still work as intended and decouple the mid range. I hope we are getting closer to answering your question, if not, we will really need a picture.

Thanks,

Mario.

Good evening Mario is as kind as you say. Do you think something can be done to restore the panel where it houses the midrange? Is there anyone who can fix or resume the panel?

Evar,

My email is in my profile. Email the photos to me and I'll try post them for you.

Hi Evar, not really sure, but fixing this cut out would really be hard. making a decoupling device out of wood probably wasn't the best idea,  I guess naim learned that and came up with the BMR suspension thing, but the problem may only be a visual one as the whole thing may still work as intended.  The nested box is behind the grill any way so can't really be seen. I'm sure this slight warp on my midrange DBL cut out has not effected the sound as the midrange is probably what I love most about them. It would be great if Willy is able to post the pics for you.

Mario.

Evar,

It's in the Biography. Need to replace "dot" and "at" with "." and "@"

Good stuff Willy, now we can see what Evar is trying to describe.

Evar, you explained yourself well as I expected to see exactly what the picture is showing. Yes I have seen this before on another pair of NBL's and on my DBL's and have been told that it is common. Don't know why it happens but I think that the characteristics of the wood are probably changing over time (drying out?) I'm no wood worker but I doubt that much can be done. At least with the NBL it is all black and you could colour those raw edges to make it less noticeable. I really don't think there would be any degradation to sound quality but would like any others who may know (TonyM, Richard Dane, Jon Honeyball, Ron Toolsie or naim??) to comment as I would also like to hear a response.

I do know that the DBL's were shipped with an flat aluminium plate bolted to the front of the cut out and I assume that it was there to stop it from breaking, not sure if it could be used to push the wood back in again?

My advice is to leave things as they are as I think more harm would come from trying to reset this.

Can any one else comment?

Regards

Mario.

Good morning
I was wondering if there was a chance to reset the front panel so my NBL would come back as new

First of all I wanted to thank Willi
