152, 155, 172, XP5XS and 05XS killed off

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 30 April 2017

I see that these five boxes have been discontinued. In many ways the 152 and 155 are not really needed with the integrated amps in the lineup. But losing the 172 seems surprising. And without the XP5 the ND5 has no natural power supply upgrade partner.

And losing the 05xs means that Naim no longer make a stand along tuner. I guess with more and more stations being on internet radio it makes sense, especially given the potential demise of FM for national channels in the U.K.

But it now means that Naim no longer make speakers, don't make arms, have ditched their best CD players, and now no longer make separate tuners. How times change. It makes me quite wistful.

If they are not selling,  it makes sense.   And if you gave me a guess at what I would have on the list,  it would be the same.  Yes its sad about the NAT-05,  but the writing's on the wall.  And although not the best SQ, the 'FM/DAB modules' seem to satisfy most listeners,  then add iRadio & its looks like game over especially as most people categorise home radio listening SQ expectations along with web streaming & iRadio.

Converging technologies means it makes perfect sense. Better to position one vanguard product in the marketplace which sells by the bucketload than a proliferation of minor sellers...I wonder how the 272 is selling? Well I should imagine.

Anything XS seems to be purged from the amplifier section.  Does it really make sense to get rid of almost an entire series of products?  Are their likely replacements coming? (Not the tuner of coarse, unless it is a dedicated Fm/internet tuner).

The 272 doesn't even appear on the product history list.... Less work when it's eventually superseded.

The ND5 and Nait are still there.

Exactly, which makes me think that possibly a new XS Pre-Amp and Amp may be coming out soon.  The CD5XS seems to still be available too.

Maybe a new XS pre-amp and amp are coming.  Plus anything with streaming in it would need to be upgraded to the new Uniti platform.

I think that this question has been asked for about 4 years.  I was with you for the last 3 of it.  I had to go elsewhere.

Sorry that the NAT has gone but ultimately the company are only going to resource that which sells.

Seems a shame that Naim no longer make a dedicated tuner but I suppose it makes sense.  Would have been nice to see a stand alone FM, dab, Internet tuner but I don't suppose it's needed with the modules in the streamers.

NAT05 XS out? Understandable although a pity since so much better than iRadio. Try that collector item on Cable and HCDR, PL & HL with Classic FM, BBC 3 or Klara - a genuine jewel. How about on SCDR? Insanely delicious!

How do you run it on cable?  As opposed to an FM antenna?  I have a flatcap XS on mine and the improvement is significant.

When I was last at the factory - I saw the blue print design pattern for the NAT05XS and I asked how many are made and the answer went something along the lines of they couldn't remember the last one they made.

I think some of the comments on portfolio rationalisation have been heeded and what with the new Units range which is quite am interesting change of direction for Naim it was needed.

Its the amps/pres that seem to sell very well and the hybrid N272 has been very successful for them. it was interesting when I was walking past the benches the two components that were being hand built at that time was a 252 and N-272 - with a Statement NAC in various stages of assembly in its own build area. (remember most of the Classic and higher are built to order). There was also a big collection of pre-built Core's in its own area too having its firmware loaded in..

I just connect to Cable radio via a double ferrite 75 Ohm Hirschmann cable. Cable dressing is however a nightmare.

Indeed, a tuner can be pick up off air via an antenna or pick up from a distributed coax lead or similar... as long it's the right carrier frequency (obviously) and the approx correct impedance it matters not.

I assume this can't be done in the uk Simon?

It makes business sense, although like Nigel I am a bit surprised about the 172...having seen my first one ever on the shelf at an audio store in Italy a week ago.

Does this mean 272 owners now own an "entry level" piece?

There is no reason why not... but I am not sure we have many coax cable distribution systems left. ... they used to carry  TV and potentially radio.. and be fed from RF distributor cabinets in the street. I remember Westminster cable in London in the mid 90s was one I worked on... I doubt it exists like that now. Also blocks of flats and apartments used to or still have TV and radio distribution system doing this... same principle.

Rather unusual for Naim to have a series with such a short production run. I have an XP5XS and bought it when it was newly released, which I think was only a little over five years ago.

it always makes good business sense to rationalize and/or streamline. but this must be guided by some overall product strategy (which includes clear identification of target market) rather than just bean count in my view.

i was in our local John Lewis today -- looked around their demo area -- not a Muso in sight!!!

i will never forget a comment i read (perhaps on this forum) that the 'Statement' series will probably end up being considered too cheap for the target mkt this sort of hifi is aimed at!!??

one interesting fact is how liquid/active the 2nd hand market for Naim components is. this is in fact one of the factors which helps old discontinued components support a robust 2nd hand market. You can get your old Olive amps serviced at Class-A or Naim themselves.

But i must admit i am not sure whether Naim leverage this in any way... i.e. i dont know whether naim consider 2nd hand mkt as eating into new component sales or not???

enjoy

Perhaps it's time for Naim to ditch all the slimline boxes. They have never been that nice. They could put whatever they intend to continue in Hicap sized boxes.

Posted on: 30 April 2017 by The Strat (Fender)

I agree HH  A shoe box XS and nDAC would be good.

Posted on: 30 April 2017 by DrMark

I always loved the shoe box sized components: A 72/HC/140 was a sexy little setup in the day!

As a 172 owner.....wonder what this will do to trade-in or second hand values....maybe it will become another Naim 'classic' in time....

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I hope their value plummets.....  So I can afford one.
