Uniti Core noise when ripping CDs
Posted by: Ian Brown on 03 May 2017
I just ripped a CD and the core was vibrating and buzzing like my dad's old electric shaver. With my hand on the Core I was able to absorb most of the vibration. This happens every few disks that I rip. It's fairly disturbing and doesn't seem normal. There is no rhyme or reason to it as far as I can tell in terms of which disk trigger the noise and vibration. Has anyone else experienced this? And is it a problem? (I have the recommended SSD Drive )
Ian, I've ripped about 550 disc's into my Core generally it's fairly quite but you do get the odd disc that sound like a spin dryer much the same as when I ripped disc's using my PC to a NAS.
It's the off-centre disc vibrating and not the Core.
So you're saying the disk is somehow faulty? If so, would that not be a problem in my CD5?
Mine did this too, I'm up to 1100 albums and nearly done with the bulk ripping. I've found one album so far that ripped with errors although it played OK on a DVD5. It's not an unrecognised album so not sure this is meant to be possible, I've yet to try ripping it on the computer for comparison.
The noise is normal, and as mentioned already it also happens ripping on a computer. It usually happens when the disc spins at high speed. I believe the cd player spins at a lower speed so you may not have noticed the unbalanced disc in there. My demo core made the sound on a couple of the discs I ripped.
Thanks for the replies. I'm not a computer-guy and didn't realize there was difference in speed. Glad to hear it's considered normal. Now if only the app could get sorted...

You never wondered why is doesn't take 45 minutes to rip a 45 minute CD?

Not an issue really for a CD player, as the rotational speed (210 to 480 rpm) is far lower than when ripping.

Nope, not once.

Too funny. When CDs first came out in the early 80s, my then-girlfriend wouldn't believe that they span at all. I had to show her that they were orientated differently when they were ejected than when they went in.
When CDs first came out my dad asked about them and after listening to my explanation said "ok, but where does the needle go?". So perhaps I'm just a chip off the old block. Cheers everyone!

Mine take 90 minutes because I rip them at half speed for extra quality....

I had to stop doing that as the WAV file was full of 2s and 0s.

I run 2 x Dacs in parallel with some custom ARM microcode to allow for the extra parity bit
