Switching off Mu-So completely at night

Posted by: peterv on 04 May 2017

Hi, our Mu-So is in our bedroom and we do not like the fact that it emits light even though it is in deep sleep mode; for our own deepest, quietest sleep, we like it really dark at night in our bedroom. Therefore, we'd like to switch on and off the Mu-So with something like the Elgato Eve Energy, a smart power plug that can be commanded with Apple's Siri. This would completely switch off the power supply to the Mu-so and that would mean a "hard" switch off and - I guess - a restart in the morning. So my question is would that do any harm to the system? Thanks in advance!

I only use my Muso QB during the week; it weekends in my locker at work. No harm that I can detect has resulted from its weekly power-down. Sometimes it's a bit hit and miss reconnecting to my flaky mobile wi-fi device on powering back up - I seem to be staring at the purple LED for longer than I'd like - but if you're connecting back into a well-established home network that shouldn't be an issue.

Couldn't you just put a bit of masking tape over the offending LED  ?

Might look a bit crap though - doesn't the whole base glow ?.

I wonder if Naim could introduce a feature in a firmware update to turn off the lighting completely if the user wishes.

I have Qbs rather than the full fat Muso, on the Qbs the Naim app allows you to drop the lighting all the way to off (unless I've been really unobservant).

You can drop the lighting down to the lowest setting whilst powered up and that dims the top functions and switches off the front logo.

In that setting, when put into standby, only the standby indictor lights up at a low level.

No the base lighting doesn't glow when in stand by, at least ours doesn't. Just the purple led , that could be shielded with a box, piece of blu tac/tape etc.

Actually the brightest thing on a Qb at night is the illuminated on/off symbol in the middle of the volume knob. This is really quite bright and casts a green glow onto the wall behind the unit. It doesn't bother me. But you could put something over it, like a black sock!
