Naim HDX streaming with Apple music on a Mac

Posted by: steveaxe on 05 May 2017

I have owned a HDX for a while now, and have only used it for ripping CD's onto the external SSD. I am now an avid user of Apple Music and want to stream this music through the HDX. I haven't purchased the music - it's just downloaded onto my iPhone and iMac and MacBook. I have no idea how to make this happen ? I hope I don't ned to buy a separate streamer after spending so much on my core system including Naim speakers and amp and pre-amp. Please help !

As far as I could tell, the HDX is limited to playing from its (internal or external) hard drive, internet radio, and acting as a UPNP server (and a CD player). I have an NDX in the same rack as my HDX with the NDX providing all my streaming functionality, I've actually retagged all my HDX rips on the NAS and rip new CDs using DBPowerAmp, and will trade in the HDX at some point.

Someone might now tell us that I could have used the HDX for streaming, but I couldn't see a way to do so.

HDX will play back music stored on its internal hard drive or a NAS. It has an analogue output stage as well as a digital one. So having an NDX next to it is a bit of a doubling up in resources.

As to Apple Music - the OP would have to find a way of moving the downloaded music onto a NAS, putting it into a Downloads Folder. Once added, HDX will automatically scan it and make it availble on the network.

Does this help?

I'm not quite sure whether that's to me or the OP, if to me I quite agree. The NDX is a fairly new purchase, the plan is to trade  in the HDX when I get a  Uniti for the upstairs system.

It was to you I now understand why you got an NDX - makes sense.

Just make sure your HDX rips are in FLAC so that the metadata can be read by other UPnP servers.

All my HDX rips are WAV, a second folder on the NAS with the WAV files copied over and quite a few evenings with MP3tag  means that they are all ID3v2 tagged, I'm serving them from Media Server on a Synology NAS, the HDX is out of the loop, just waiting for my Atom/Nova demo....

Thanks all for the feedback - very helpful. I will try the Naim pdf this weekend to see if it works. I will let you know !

Hi Nick - I looked at this over the weekend and got stuck very early in the process with the following:

  1. In the Change Music Folder Location window that appears, navigate to the location where you would like your iTunes music to be moved. This should be: ~/public/ (the tilde “~” represents your home directory).

Where and how would I do this (as you can tell I am a complete novice).  Many thanks !

Sorry, Steve.

That is a question for Naim Support.  They are very responsive, if you contact them directly.  Better than waiting for them to notice your inquiry here.

It has been years since I demoed an HDX.  I did use it successfully with my iTunes library, at the time.

Best of luck.

You can plug any appple device iphone or ipod most models into the usb front socket and play the music that way. Probably not the best longterm solution but it can be done.

Hi Claus - thanks and I tried that. However my iPhone 6s was not recognised, and my iPod doesn't sync the Apple Music downloads from my Mac so that doesn't work either. Looks like its back to Naim support to see what they come up with.

HDX will recognize any downloaded music on your imac or macbook on the same network, as long as the folder is set up as a Network Share.
