Playlist disapear
Posted by: Monkadill on 06 May 2017
its quite common for me to make a play list on my NAIM app on my Samsung Galaxy s9 only for the tracks to become unavailable for the playlist a day later. The songs are still there and playable and nothing was moved on my NAS.
The APP version is 2.0 build 1548
Does anyone have a for this?
To add, my source is SYNOLOGY NAS
This has happened to me in two different sets of circumstances:
1. The network interface on my NAS croaked, so I had to replace the motherboard. I assume that the change in network interface MAC address (or similar) meant that the UPnP address of the NAS streamer changed, which rendered all of my Naim App playlists invalid.
2. I've been building an RPi3 streamer using the Rygel streamer software - if I don't save any settings when re-booting the RPi3, the Rygel streamer address changes and Naim App playlists are invalid.
Were are the playlists actually held?
On the Naim App on an iPhone
Best to create plylists on the UPnP server, not on the Naim app.
This way they are also backed up by the server.
Adam - is there a guide to creating and using playlist on the UPnP Server anywhere?

Unless I'm completely mistaken it's down to the individual UPnP server software how it handles playlists. I use UnitiServe so this is where I create my playlists.
with current app right click when playing song or album you wish to add, prompt come up add to playlist, either create new play list or add to existing playlist - this is how mine works - lastest app using Asset on QNAP

This creates a playlist on the app. I would suggest creating it on a server
I second Adam's suggestion to create playlists on the server, not the app, due to it's long standing habit of losing them, and lack of backup.
The problem with putting them on the server/NAS is that it isn't very spontaneous, especially if it means firing up a computer. At least, with the Unitiserve, you can easily switch from the Naim app to N-Serve on the same device, and add tracks to a playlist. I'm not sure if any other servers make it that easy.
If I understand correctly, most (all?) playlists can be a simple text file list of the location of tracks on the server.
As long as you are sure that your UPnP streamer software can parse playlists on the server (the Rygel software I'm playing with on an RPi3 cannot), then you can easily create a playlist and change it to your liking with a text editor rather than relying on often clunky UPnP streamer playlist functionality.
Can I ask, those if you who create your playlists as files on a server/NAS – is there any limit to how long that list is i.e if a Naim player is pointed to it from the App will it just keep playing and playing...?
What I'm wondering about is Shuffle/Random play.....One of the things that's always annoyed me and that I find clunky when trying to shuffle play on UpNP and with Naim is the 500 track limit it loads (as well as the fact the random play is always from the same alphbetic track selection – so tracks past a certain letter never get included in the list..!)......I've never really known if this is a general UpNP thing or if it's a limitation in Naim's software.......?
I can click shuffle in my iTunes library and never hear the same track again for about 10 days...!
Anyway, just a thought if it would be possible to generate a few (long) random playlists as text files (is there software that could automate this?), put them on the NAS and then point the Naim App to them....? Admittedly, it's still a rather limited approach to true random play, as well as a hassle in user experience......
Thanks!
And why don't you just randomly play your entire library instead?
Whilst I've noticed the 500 track limit of the Naim App, I have not noticed that using shuffle will not play certain tracks.
The UPnP streaming software I usually use, Twonky, automatically generates a number of playlists on the server - last played, most played, etc. The Naim App will only load the first 500 tracks of these playlists, so it appears that the 500 track limit applies both to Naim App and server playlists.
If you'd like to generate a playlist of all of the flac music files on your server, you can do it like this using Linux (and probably Mac, but I didn't try):
$ find /mnt/public/music | grep flac > /mnt/public/music/playlist.m3u
The 500 track limit is a limitation of the Naim app, not the streamer or the server. So the workaround is to select your full track listing with the remote control/front panel display, and hit Play. If you then return to the app, you can use its controls, you just can't view the full play queue, only the track currently playing.
