Merging Naim Libraries

Posted by: Naimthatune on 10 May 2017

Quick question.

I have a NAS drive with library A, ripped via SSD ...  in paralllel I have a second system with another NAS containing library B also ripped via Naim equipment.

If I mounted both NAS drives on my mac and merged the 2 libraries onto one physical drive, either A or B, maintaining the logical file structure, would the Naim application pick up all the metadata and give me a full combined library? Or would the fact that I'm effectively dragging and dropping Naim rips into and existing Naim library cause confusion?

Thanks for any tips!

I think you I'll be fine with your proposal and should have no issues with reading the combined library. One thing to watch though, is that if you have both nas drives running on the network, after combined, then the system will still read both drives, and you would end up showing multiple copies of the music files, IE album 1 will show in both original nas and the new combined nas, so 2 copies will appear on your system

Are you saying that the second library was ripped with a unitiserve or HDX? Is that what you are playing them on now? If so, and you want to put them on the other nas and play directly from it, make sure that the Naim server converts them to flac first, if they are currently in WAV.

As last long as both libraries are on the same network, a Naim streamer can see and play then. It doesn't matter that they are stored on different drives. If they are from a Naim ripper, don't move or edit them via a computer as this can cause problems.

Your question would be easier to answer if you told us what storage and playback devices you are using, and how they are attached to your network.

If both libraries were ripped using a UnitiServe / HDX you can merge them, provided either UnitiServe or HDX will be used as a UPnP server.

Just don't change anything inside the actual album folders.

I've ran that experiement a while ago and worked ok. UnitiServe just picked up the new folders and treated them as its own. File type used: WAV.

Thanks for the replies.

To clarify, I'm running a couple of Naim systems in different houses. Both have SSDs ripping to its own Synology NAS.

There is little overlap in the respective collections so I want to combine them into on drive so I can take that drive to either house and have the full collection anywhere I go.

Will still be accessed via a naim server, either SSD or one of the new uniti devices when I upgrade my Qute in the future.

HH suggests converting to Flac, I assume to keep metadata whole, but Adam seems to think manually merging the Wav rips into one drive will suffice.

I guess I'll try a sample album or two and check the libabry recognizes the new manual addition...

Much apprecited.

Just one correction. Adam generally doesn't think  it's way too much for me.

I actually combined WAV rips from two different UnitiServes into one library and they were read correctly. When I changed my UnitiServe (4 times in total) the old library was just read and used by a new unit, this was also confirmed by Naim support.

Excellent...

Case closed.

Thanks again.
