Faded Olive Casing

Posted by: John Roth on 11 May 2017

Hello - I have a 1997 NAC 82 that I loooove.   However, the top of the case has become discolored.  Has anyone tried to paint a Naim Amp case.   Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi,

Quite a few people have used black shoe polish and a good bristle brush to bring the new look back. Worked very well on my old 62!

Thanks James - Silly me, but would you mind briefly explaining the process?

Shoe polish is the way to do it. Not cream - proper polish in a tin.

Give it clean with a cloth and slightly soapy water. Rinse the soap off. Dry it well. Put on some polish with a dry cloth and brush it with a shoe brush. Think of it as a shoe.

Awesome!  Will give it a go!  Thanks all!!

Don't go mad with the polish. Just a little, then use more only if required.

Good point!  Don't' want to get any loose shoe polish on the bottom of the fish tank I keep on top of my kit!  ;-)  hahaha....

while on this topic, was there a change of shade of "olive" to the front panel at some point in time? Looking at my stack, the '95 SNAXO is a very slightly different colour to the rest. My older ('94) NAXO is the same.

I'm guessing a colour change after '94-95 (as both XOs are of that vintage), but then again my NAT03 is '93 and its "olive" matches the later models ('98 to '02)

To the few following this.  Black kiwi shoe polish worked perfectly!  Looks like new.  For future reference take the time to clean the case well before applying,  Thanks Mr. Halibut!

[@mention:55208644568635797] - Yes, and no. Was there a planned or engineered change in the shade of 'Olive' fascias...? No. Were there variations in the shade of 'Olive' fascias, over the years. Yes, there were - there was a lack of consistency. Think I read (on here), that someone left the company making the fascias (for Naim), and the required shade was 'lost' with them.....

That's great, and far cheaper than having it resprayed. I have a ring on the top of my 272 from the bottom of a wine glass, which won't come out with either soapy water or Astonish tile and glass cleaner. I may have to get the polish out as well.

Am I missing something. Black shoe polish on an OLIVE case.

Personally, I'd try spraying it with WD40 and giving it a good clean first.

Your correct, I've just checked my olive gear, the case is not as olive as I thought.

Although I'd still give WD40 a try before polish.

Astonish Glass and Tile, used with hard black foam, does the trick.
