Download Pricing - who's zoomin' who?

Posted by: AndyP19 on 15 May 2017

Following the Music on Special Offer and the recent Hi Res Download threads, I did a little homework on the new Paul Weller 'A Kind of Revolution' (non-deluxe version) and this is what I found:-

                 24/44           16/44

7Digital   £10.99         £7.99

Qobuz    £13.64         £11.82

HDTracks £15.50

Now I'm assuming a 24/44 is a 24/44 is a 24/44 all of the above are the same?

Interesting commodity pricing and adds a new dimension to you get what you pay for or maybe you're paying for a better service. I wonder what the actual cost of a 24/44 recording/license is? I'm not getting too worked up about this as I've been through it all before when first buying CD and hoofing around the various shops to get the best price. Just goes to show you need to do a little homework and shop before parting with that hard earned cash!

Whatever someone wants to charge for it I expect. We can too often confuse industry price fixing and distribution agreements with the law. Happily, us humble punters (who are killing the industry because we refuse to own the same stuff in 6 different formats, won't buy crap just because it's new and sometimes make backup copies instead of buying twice) can shop around for the best price on line.

I won't get worked up either. They can get their elephant choking bundles of cash from whoever is willing. I might be at times, but not often and never if avoidable.

I am on an ongoing base scanning what is happening in the download space to get my music at the best price possible......

1. In general I buy a lot of stuff through Qobuz. As I have Qobuz sublime - most albums turn out to be the cheapest there. Sometimes up to 5 euros cheaper than everywhere else. They sometimes also have great additional discount on selections from labels.

2. ECM is a different ballgame I sometimes land with Qobuz. But quite often pro studio master and high res audio com are better for ECM.

3. Eclassical get's also a share of my business - they have good daily deals and have sometimes interesting stuff on introduction.

4. Free downloads from LiveJazzLounge. While not on cd quality, but still interesting.

5. Bandcamp, sometimes a bit cheaper but mostly not given the pound...., has sometimes stuff you can only get there.

6. Classical box sets watch out check them all - even hdtracks can sometimes have a fantastic deal.

7. Niche stuff via cdbaby download.

8. Remainders directly via labels...
