CDX2 vs streaming.
Posted by: Finkfan on 15 May 2017
I have a 272 on demo and have had the chance to compare my bare CDX2 against both lossless CD rips and HIFI Tidal. The results have surprised me. Firstly I'm really surprised at the poor audio quality on tidal. I was expecting to hear beautiful lossless FLAC files flowing from the system. But the sound is a little flat. There's a loss of dynamics and everything sounds disappointingly dull. Switch to the CDX2 and music is flowing again and there's a smile on my face. Now the next comparison surprised me even more. After ripping a few discs to my laptop it was time to hear what lossless files streamed from here sounded like. It was fantastic. In fact I tried a few tracks and I couldn't hear the difference between CDX2 and streamed files. I'd didnt have time for an extended listen so I'll try it all again this evening, but i at the moment I can see why so many have fallen for the 272.
Wenger - if streaming is to be your 2nd choice source - why not just buy a cheap Bluetooth DAC. If you take to it - you won't it's really meant for the proletariat - then you can invest in something better but in the meantime indulge in the CDX2. And on this I disagree with Simon combined with a XPS2 the CDX2 does all music with aplomb

No... not at all... the CDX2 has a distinctive sound that is not matched by anything else I have heard from Naim or elsewhere. .......
My view is that if you are going to feed the CDX2 into a NDAC, there is probably little point in doing so... the real value of the CDX2 is it DSP/DAC/analogue output stage combination... and you will bypass all this if feeding the NDAC, and you might as well stream the CD.............
The NDS/555PS is very different from the CDX2 with the former being more detailed, transparent and neutral across media, but doesn't have that infectious CDX2 performance you get some from discs.
Appreciate the feedback, I am considering the best way to have both options available, I don't want to part from my cdx2, but would like the benefits of streaming.
Always nice sitting on the side-lines, and a good question surfaces from the Forum!
I can't part from my Cdx2 Mk I, Sold my LP 12.
I also would like the benefits of Streaming.
Bare Cdx2, would like to upgrade, and improve on that Naim Sound, but getting mixed messages!
Mr. Richard Dane and others say, remove the plug from the Cdx2, add an external PS.
Whilst, others are just fine with the Bare Boogie Machine.
Hence, I have no other options, but to allocate my upgrade funds elsewhere in my system.
Meanwhile, Local Streaming ain't bad, as tonym says rheumatoid arthritis makes it hard getting out of the chair.
An ongoing Thread, Its Hard Getting Out Of My Chair!

Local Streaming:
4 days of continuous music from itunes Library, endless number of custom playlist, internet radio, all controlled from my Android Cell phone, whilst lying in Bed!
I hear a tune on radio, I like, $1.29 or $.99 and I add it to my Library.
There is a catch, the Cell phone cost me $37.77 per month!

i agree for that : cdx2 with xps2 is a superb machine, with superb prat and urgency. Without the xps2, the soundstage is recessed, the sound less refined, and a bit hard too. Sometimes i regret to have sold this combo.

The cdx2 with xpsdr is superb, so as said that needs to stay.
It's the benefits of finding new music with ease that really appeals. Hear something before deciding to get the cd....
But would like a decent quality streamer?
Well if just for sampling a Bluetooth DAC and Tidal would surely suffice?

Have to give it some thought, I suppose even a muso or Qb would suffice?

if you want the nearly same quality as cdx2/xps2, with naim sound, there is only ndx/ xps combo, perhaps you can find second hand. Perhaps you can also connect a streaming bridge like auralnic, with bnc/usb cable to the cdx2 dac? the cdx2.2 have a digital output, so i think it is possible to connect a streaming bridge....
[@mention:50422349809511500] I'd give a Qb a go. I'll be getting one myself for our dinning room. As you know I've found the whole streaming experience highly addictive. I'm not sure if the 90 days of Tidal hifi offer is still available, someone will tell us I'm sure, but with your first month free anyway you could get up to 3 months of Tidal for nothing. I still have another month of free Tidal left. I'm sure you'd spend a lot of time sat with your iPad in your lap browsing away till all hours of the night.

I think that's my longer term plan....i want to get to grips with the whole streaming format first

I'm inclined to think that's a good forward move, gets me used to the whole process...
I took the option of the 90 day Tidal trial about three weeks ago this with a Qb I purchased about a year ago. I'm quite surprised how often I use it and also how many CDs I have purchased since listening to them on Tidal.
A good way to get acquainted with new music and probably quite cost effective as you can hear prior to purchase fairly good sound quality but no match for the Core.

Auralic Aries Mini would be perfect for your needs. It has a fine DAC built in or you can use an external DAC if you have one you prefer. Plus it's cheaper than a QB or Muso. Great streaming solution to get your feet wet with little money spent.

The bonus of hear before you buy, suits me perfectly. Question, Does the Qb have digital radio?

I like the idea of a small box in the front room for background listening, which is why the Qb or muso appeals.. But thanks for the suggestion
No DAB on Qb [@mention:50422349809511500] but it has internet radio with far more options.

Wenger, the Qb does have internet radio the pre set limit is five but I generally run from the NDX as rooms if I want any stations that are not stored on the Qb the control from the app is superb. I run my main system, Unitilite and Qb from an ipad only really pick up the remote to switch the button illumination on and off on the 252.
That's not quite right. The Qb can have loads of presets, but you can only access the first five by touching the radio button on the top. The rest are accessed via the app.
what is qb?
C'est le petit mu-so.
French Rooster posted:what is qb?
thanhs hungryhalibut and erich. I was just curious.....But i hardly presume that the sound quality is not on the league of the cdx2/xps2. Maybe a decent sound to have an idea of an album before....Perhaps the op don't need more for streaming....
I have decided to 'dip my toe' into the world of streaming.
Going to have a chat with my dealer in order to purchase a Qb or Muso for the kitchen/meeting area.
Those that have a Qb seem to be very pleased with it.
Does anyone have a muso and can provide some feedback?
