CDX2 vs streaming.

Posted by: Finkfan on 15 May 2017

I have a 272 on demo and have had the chance to compare my bare CDX2 against both lossless CD rips and HIFI Tidal. The results have surprised me. Firstly I'm really surprised at the poor audio quality on tidal. I was expecting to hear beautiful lossless FLAC files flowing from the system. But the sound is a little flat. There's a loss of dynamics and everything sounds disappointingly dull. Switch to the CDX2 and music is flowing again and there's a smile on my face. Now the next comparison surprised me even more. After ripping a few discs to my laptop it was time to hear what lossless files streamed from here sounded like. It was fantastic. In fact I tried a few tracks and I couldn't hear the difference between CDX2 and streamed files. I'd didnt have time for an extended listen so I'll try it all again this evening, but i at the moment I can see why so many have fallen for the 272.

I reads like your system has started to sound bad today so why would the 10mm dedicated supply 'gone bad' overnight?

As discussed in another topic, periodically powering a system down and back up will usually 'freshen things up' considerably so the switch to to other supply could be the reason for the changed sound as well.

I guess it could be. Will have to hear what 6mm sounds like.

It not that's it's gone bad over night really. I haven't had a long time to sit and listen to the new setup and it's been plumbed in to the 10mm dedicated supply from day 1 in its new location. On initial switch on it was rough as old boots. Plugged in to the standard ring (also new) and it all sounded much better. After spending a few evenings in the office with the system on in the background I just felt today it wasn't sounding right. Lacking in detail with a kind of muddy bottom end. Increasing the volume made things worse. I thought it might be 'small room issues', and maybe it is. The ordinary 2.5mm ring isn't right, but after a short time, better to listen to than the 10mm. At least for me.

So have you pulled the trigger on the 272 yet?

have owned a CDX2 through XPS (Non DR) - now have bare NDX - for me on quality of music presenation they are both great vehicles, which one do I prefer now having had the NDX for 3 years - have to say NDX also hav heard the 272 on demo

I went down the NDX route because I also play vinyl and the box count was not a concern but either is a real coin toss

the one issue I don't miss is getting up to change CD's - and the huge CD rack has gone and replaced by an IPAD

My Tidal experience has improved greatly since adding the Chord 2Qute separate DAC to my ND5XS even the lower bitrate radio stations I listen to like Roots fm UK sound a whole lot better than before.

I haven't made the call yet. My dealer will give me a few weeks of uninterrupted playing before he calls me. I think it's here to stay though. I've only had one glitch so far. The app went blank earlier today. Couldn't do anything. Uninstalled it. Re installed it. Still no joy but had the settings menu only. Pressed reset app and all was ok again. Now you don't get that with a CD player.

Listen to me moaning, the remote still worked fine!

Internet streaming only for me - Qobuz for quality.

And it will only get better.

But, that means another wave of choices & pros n cons.

For example, use Qobuz with different devices (ipad, android phone etc) & you'll get a different sound, for better or worse.

The broadcaster is now a part of the hifi too.

In terms of radio, stations such as classic fm & bbc have spent a lot of time, money & expertise getting it very good. Others don't appear to have bothered quite so much...

...Or, are bothered quite so much.

I take it you're using a NAS drive  and you've installed asset5.1 on it?

Posted on: 17 May 2017 by Finkfan

Nope. This is my first attempt at streaming. I'm ripping files to flac using wmp on my laptop. Streaming from there.

i suggest that maybe the 272 is still breaking in,and you simply hit a rough patch?

Posted on: 17 May 2017 by Finkfan

Could be. It's only 5 days old

Well that's your issue right there. When you do pull the trigger, keep it in mind that you'll need a NAS drive.

Its v simple really; I built one with a QNAP TS-251+ with 8GB. Installed 2x1TB SSD's. cost me £600 to build (all new from the net) with a bit of thrifty shopping. All you need do is install the SSD's and Asset Premium 5.1

The naim app works a treat with Asset.

I have no Idea what you just said!

Research needed!

Your dealer should be able to assist you, failing that If you're in London I can help you build one, it takes about 1-2 hours... no worries

i am not sure WMP is very good,i use jriver on my laptop.i would simply copy some files to a usb thumb drive, and stick them in the front port of the 272...see if that sounds any better.

Thank. I'll give that a go at some point.

download dbpoweramp (its ripping software and lets you edit the metadata after) its by the same people who do asset. All recommended by naim.

Which ssd is it best to go for [@mention:1566878604008263]?

I use 'Sandisk Ultra II' which retail for £250-300 each but if you shop around on the net you can find them for a low as £145 each.
