CDX2 vs streaming.
Posted by: Finkfan on 15 May 2017
I have a 272 on demo and have had the chance to compare my bare CDX2 against both lossless CD rips and HIFI Tidal. The results have surprised me. Firstly I'm really surprised at the poor audio quality on tidal. I was expecting to hear beautiful lossless FLAC files flowing from the system. But the sound is a little flat. There's a loss of dynamics and everything sounds disappointingly dull. Switch to the CDX2 and music is flowing again and there's a smile on my face. Now the next comparison surprised me even more. After ripping a few discs to my laptop it was time to hear what lossless files streamed from here sounded like. It was fantastic. In fact I tried a few tracks and I couldn't hear the difference between CDX2 and streamed files. I'd didnt have time for an extended listen so I'll try it all again this evening, but i at the moment I can see why so many have fallen for the 272.

Too much information, don't want to hear anymore
Ancient technology, obsolete, demode, passe.....
The ability to stream music elsewhere in the house is also very appealing now. A Muso in the lounge or a Qb in the kitchen, either I'm sure would get used a lot.

Be careful - it's addictive
Just read the reviews on the NDS, very poor!!!!!
Which is good i don't want one!
Just noticed my pants are on fire...
FINKFAN, added a NDX to a Olive system a couple of years ago the CDI just gathered dust got bitten by the quality and convenience of streaming ended up upgrading the Olive system last year and waved bye bye to the CD player.
Since I've sold my CD player I have bought more Cds than ever before just had eight turn up this morning the Core can get hungry at times.
Also using a Unitilite in a small system upstairs and a Qb in the kitchen or Conservatory depending on the time of year the ease of streaming around the house is very beneficial.

I have an NDX into Olives in the main system, 3 Qbs around the house, and a demo scheduled of the Atom and Nova, it's a slippery slope. And as Pcd, since going to streaming, my CD buying has reached a peak I haven't known for years. I have 25 CDs sitting waiting to be filed on the shelves, that's the purchasing from last month alone.

Eoink, my postman has fitted a CD rack on his trolley.
Or to paraphrase a quote from Linn: Streaming is the best way to play CDs!
After a half day of listening with a friend with gold ears and hifi experince of 30 years, listened almost every brand every model
Cd2x + ps555dr + SL interconnects
Vs 272/ps555dr - cisco switch/AQ diamond ethernet cable
Also an alternative ps
With 300dr/focal sopra2/sl full loom
Cd2x/555 combo is clear winner for hım, 10 second only, day and night
I did blind test hım, every single time he identified the cd playback, choose that one
Jazz, classic more obvious, poor recordings less, he even prefered cd to 24/192 , he hates anything other than 16/44
Go figure !
Looks like i need to buy 2 xlr/din cables, 1 din/din and 555psdr...
So nice to have an opportunity to demo! Need urgent lottery win !
For me to establish opinion onanew box sq takes at least amonth always was a bit slow.or mayby you guys suffer from temporary new box fobia.so what can we conclud:a3k pre streamer compromise better then 8-9 k cdx2 xpsdr.l m thinking selling my books and get me a kindel.
Sincerly i am still comparing them and can not tell the difference....
Streamer is also with 555psdr
What pre amp did you use with the CDX2/555DR [@mention:3678285645782720]?
272/555ps my only pre
Emre my coment was made before l saw your post.anyway your search for SQ looks to me serious and objective which is not always the case with other members.

With a CDX2/555 and 300, there was presumably a matching preamp in the system, which one might assume would be a 252 if it was well balanced. Hardly surprising that this beats a 272, but you haven't given us the full story.
Sorry if i was not very clear
It is a 272 based setup, comparing the 272 the streamer with my cd2x,adding SL interconnect and 555psdr
Nothing brand new...
FinkFan Have you considered an NDX or ND5XS/282/HCDR/250DR the cost of 272/XPSDR must be in the same ball park as NDX or ND5XS/282, I ask because when I listened to the 272/XPSDR/250 my ND5XS/Chord 2Qute/282/200 was better in all arrears. The only thing that I can see the 272/XPSDR had over my own system was the fact that it was an end game system and if you have an upgradeitis problem then I can see the attraction. The ND/282/HCDR/250DR is only one halfwidth box bigger than the three box 272/XPSDR/250DR so no real advantage there and as DAC technology advances the Digital out on the ND streamers can be used to integrate those advances and will keep the system modern and up to date.

Indeed the ability to slot in an external DAC is the beauty of ND boxes...
Food for thought BTB. My dealer has offered me a great deal on trading in my SN1 and HCDR against the 272. If I went for the 282 I'd only have the SN to trade so it would cost me more. Likewise with trading in the CDX2 and TQ black diamond din against an XPSDR. If I went for one of the NDs I'd keep the din cable and only have the CDX2 to trade and it would again cost me more.
I know spending the extra cash would get me a better sound, but that will always be the case whatever system I have. I'm delighted with what the 272 does and the combo with the 250DR sounds fantastic. Adding an XPSDR would finish my boxes and hopefully halt any upgraditis for a long time. I'll be comparing the new 272/250DR to my current CDX2/SN/HCDR/250DR over the weekend and then will have a chat with my dealer to see what the final deal will be.
Finfan, would it be possible to hear a XPS in the mix as well it makes such a difference on the 272.
I'll be speaking to my dealer over the weekend. I know he'll get an XPSDR over to me as soon as he gets one in and he'll be in no rush to take the trade ins back with him, unless of course he already has a buyer lined up. I'm really interested to hear the 272/XPSDR/250DR at home rather than at the dealers or a show.
Finkfan, You really must try the XPS DR as it takes the 272 / 250DR combo to a completely different level.
I can't wait to try it [@mention:54786295706447945]
