CDX2 vs streaming.
Posted by: Finkfan on 15 May 2017
I have a 272 on demo and have had the chance to compare my bare CDX2 against both lossless CD rips and HIFI Tidal. The results have surprised me. Firstly I'm really surprised at the poor audio quality on tidal. I was expecting to hear beautiful lossless FLAC files flowing from the system. But the sound is a little flat. There's a loss of dynamics and everything sounds disappointingly dull. Switch to the CDX2 and music is flowing again and there's a smile on my face. Now the next comparison surprised me even more. After ripping a few discs to my laptop it was time to hear what lossless files streamed from here sounded like. It was fantastic. In fact I tried a few tracks and I couldn't hear the difference between CDX2 and streamed files. I'd didnt have time for an extended listen so I'll try it all again this evening, but i at the moment I can see why so many have fallen for the 272.

Don't try it, don't try it

The only problem is you will not want to send it back..

Finkfan, have you been converted to streaming? How would you compare the 272 to your cdx2?
Morning Wenger. I can honestly say I've been converted. I haven't had a lot of time to listen over the past few days but the last time the 272 had changed again and was sounding a little more delicate. Some of the bass boom I was hearing in some music has now gone. It's a brilliant bit of kit and I've found myself listening to Tidal as much as my own cd rips. The enormous library of music at your finger tips is brilliant. This weekend I shall definitely compare new setup with old, but my mind is made up.....SN, HCDR, CDX2, TQ black diamond din out, 272, XPSDR in!
Good choice!
My CDX2 is leaving next week too.

When a car was invented they made a chap walk in front, waving a flag, warning all of an impending doom....
I haven't seen that recently... Although come to think of it, given what some drivers do, that may not be a bad idea after all

I've found a flag.....just need to draw out the kids inheritance... and I'm good to go....
cd2x/555psdr/SL din/din sounding better than 272/555 for sure.... how much better is depending on the cd and rip/HD
if they were a good price upgrade i would not hesitate but it is big money to upgrade a cd player...
still testing...
Wenger it would be CDX2 out NDX in. Keep your TQ black diamond and XPSDR. The NDX retails at nearly a grand less than the CDX2. It would make for an interesting comparison.
I also have a similar HI-FI system, SN2 CDX2.2 and relevant TP power supply but after the birth of my son I'm thinking to simplify further my system but each time I load a CD in the drawer I change idea ......sooner or later I'll do the change but I do not know how to change without lose much sound quality. I'm very attracted from the new Uniti NOVA but I think it would be a very radical change!

You seem to have forgotten I am not talking to you..............but nevertheless a very good suggestion ........
My NDX isn't a patch on the CDX2 I had previously. I made a big mistake selling the CDX2 and going down the streaming route in my opinion.
I have made a positive change by upgrading to an external Beresford DAC, which is a significant improvement on the internal DAC, but it still has a harsher sound than I would like.
Really beginning to look at other options now.

Interesting, I don't want to be taking a backwards step.
I wonder if anyone has compared the NDX to the 272?
I have. As least, I've heard them both but in two different setups, rather than back to back.
I haven't -- but that is what I read in a German audio magazine [Germans love numbers; those we understand much better than just flowery words...]: The ND5XS scores 133, the 272 138, and the NDX 140.
Does this correspond with the experience in the Forum?

P.S. Totoro is back from his journey in the Cat Bus -- hi Totoro!

Blimey. 133 - 140 out of 100 isn't too bad.

Personally I think you may well be. The NDX is a lot harsher sounding than the CDX2. You can better it by adding an XPS2 but then you talking about spending a lot more money.
It's definitely a case where you need a demo. My experience of the NDX that if anything, when I did a home demo a while ago, I was worried that it was over-polite, where I find in my olive system a lot of digital sources seem over-bright to me. At that point I didn't see any benefit over my HDX, which was a bit livelier and brasher. I changed my mind when I decided I wanted access to Tidal, and the NDX is now used for probably 60% of my listening, the rest being vinyl. Like everything, it can be very system and room dependent, I'm very interested that Paul's view is effectively the direct opposite of mine, but dfferent electronics and speakers downstream, different room, different ears and stuff between them...

I actually think they sound very similar - there are possibly some small differences, but the level of details and musical engagement is the same.
And most importantly - they play music and sound like Naim
I'm late to this thread but thought I'd throw in my two pence worth.
For me the Tidal Hifi sounds as good as my CDS3.
cDS3/ Tp -> lavender -> 552
Mac mini/ Audivana/ tidal -> TP Dac -> SL interconnect -> 552

Nick
