Super uniti or star

Posted by: Skinnypuppy71 on 17 May 2017

Hi there guy's I'm debating with myself.....I'm thinking of selling on my cd collection and just going to stick with vinyl and a streaming based system as I can't remember the last time I spun a cd ..so my nait xs,cd5i italic, arcam ir dac and rega ear mk 2 headphone amp would all be traded towards the purchase of either a superuniti or the  pending arrival of the uniti star.(Nac 172xs also maybe an option)...the question is....as I'm not going to need the cd ripping and playing capabilities of the uniti star....is the amp and streaming section going to be a world apart from the older SU.oh and I have about 1200-1400 cds. the rest of my kit contains a project 2 xperience classic with audio technica ptgii, trichord dino mk3 and the never connected psu and a pair of pmc twenty 21's . cheers for any input and helpful info.

Whatever you decide to do, just bear in mind that if you have ripped your CDs to computer files for streaming, you must not then sell those CDs unless you delete the digital files as well. Best just store them away.

I'm not too worried about copyright law in this day and age but it's a none issue as I am a Spotify premium subscriber and I'm more than happy with it's 328kbs which will be going lossless in the very near future.

We have over 2,000 CDs in the roof. Recently I bought a Keith Jarrett Beethoven Sonatas box set for about £60, ripped it and shoved it in the roof, which seemed quite sad. I'd never sell them, but I'd love to be able to give the whole lot to the local hospice shop - they could make a good deal of money. But I can't do that either, which is such a shame.

Anyway, I suggest the OP waits for the new boxes to appear and gas a listen. The real, choice is the SU or the Nova. A used SU is about £2,000 and a Nova is £4,000. Do you have £4,000? Do you need the new facilities, such as Google Cast? Do you like the look of the Nova? Do you want to be more future proof? These are questions only you can answer.

Bear in mind that Spotify sounds crap compared to ripped CDs or lossless downloads. Even Tidal is less good than ripped CDs. Is it worth having a Naim system just to listen to streamed services, unless vinyl is the main source of course.

Well....in my room playing music via spotify through my arcam ir dac against my cd5i mk2 there's very little in it re sound quality between the two..yes the cd player is better but not enough to bother me too much considering I listen to vinyl more often.....so Spotify for casual listening and searching out new music and my vinyl for more focused listening.

Hungry halibut I don't recall asking about a uniti Nova and I believe the uniti star will be the best bang for buck within the line up,but I'll go have a listen to them when they're released.

You're right, you didn't ask about the Nova. Does that mean it cannot be suggested? All I said is that it's the direct equivalent of the SU.

Just trying to streamline my system and have decent Sq...I'm not over obsessive about needing to have top of the line naim equipment and I'm sure the uniti star will have all the power I need  as I don't have a huge room to listen in or difficult speakers to drive.

Personally you'll not go wrong with the existing Superuniti. It's a wonderful piece of engineering and the ingenuity behind its brief is head and shoulders above anything I've come across thus far.

My system, its a slim as it can be: SuperUniti/Proac Studio 118's/Pixel Plus stands/QNAP SSDs/TelluriumQ Black/Furutech mains/CAT6A

I've had a Superuniti and if I was in your situation I'd be tempted to buy one rather than go for the newer range. Personally I use ripped cd's and Tidal so I can't see how a Nova or Star would benefit me. I don't like the look of the new range either, the classic style looks more "right" to me and if you wanted to add a power amp as an upgrade everything would match.

personally speaking, if they do away with the sledge and sleeve design we'd be loosing a good chuck of the physical 'DNA'

Nigel,

I didn't know that Keith Jarrett had recorded Beethoven Sonatas. It sounds interesting. Thanks for the info.

I hope you are recovering steadily and satisfactorily. Music is really something with the power of salvation.

To the music

You lovely art, in how many gray hours,
Where I was stricken by life
You ignited my heart for warm love,
You brought me to a better world,
Brought me to a better world!

Often a sigh, that left your harp,
A sweet, holy chord from you,
Has shown me the existence of a better time
You lovely art, I thank you for it,
You lovely art, I thank you!

So why you look at the SU and not the Nova ? ( The SU is in the top of the Uniti line at moment) .

Yes, but you can actually buy a SU now, and probably a good used on will cost less than half the price of a Nova when it arrives.

You are right Chris, I forget that in UK it is different than in Italy where it is almost impossible to find a SU used, here you have to spend 5.800 euros  while the Nova in the list will cost 5,400

Superuniti looks like a good used buy in my eyes.....think that's the route I will go.cheers for input people, much appreciated.

The Superuniti will not disappoint, and imho it looks much nicer and is easier to live with...... And you can buy an awful lot of music for £2k!

Good luck with the hunt for a nice example.

Have you considered keeping your Nait xs and going for an ND5xs or even a s/h NDX?  This could well be the best solution of all.

Good man, I recon the SU is a future classic and a killer product in general.

There's still a few ex-dem units floating about. There's one or two on the Bay ATM too. I was lucky enough to find an ex-dem unit for £1795 but it's without BT. The dealer had it boxed and stored away for years. still requires/d some running in yet at he said it had only had max 100-150 hours use.

I tried that combo and the 172/155.. all at the same demo. The SU has 'another gear' when it comes to depth, detail and agility IMHO.

Posted on: 17 May 2017 by Richard Dane

OK, fair enough, at least you did the dem.

Posted on: 17 May 2017 by spacey

I wish I could've bought the SU back then but I was on a strict hifi diet back then. Was scaling back from an active ATC-25A/resonessence MIRUS system and wanted to keep enough back to buy a Honda Fireblade.

But its been worth the wait. The SU and Studio 118s, connected with TQB is an awesome l'ill system.

[@mention:46901102389561600] There's an ex-dem SU on d'Bay ATM - a late 2016 model

Yeah..seen it...but I've got some kit to sell first before the Mrs would allow such an amount of money to be frivolously wasted on hi-fi products (her words)and I just bought myself a new camera and lens.but all will be in hand soon....again thanks for the input guy's.
