Munich High End 2017

Posted by: Bert Schurink on 17 May 2017

I am getting more and more excited for the coming high end in Munich. I will definitely go there on Sunday and might even consider to go there on Saturday, as one day is often to short.

Things I am going to have a serious look at are:

- the new Astell & Kern players the Kann and the Ultimate

- the focal headphones

- make a 2nd comparison between my Shure 846 and KSE1500 earphones

.....and much more.

Anybody who wants me to have a special look at something, please let me know I am happy to have my eyes and ears open for you. Obviously I will also write a report on what I saw and heard...

Quite funny I will have a room acoustics expert in the house on Friday, so I will have something additional to enjoy....

Bert,

If you see Totem Acoustics I'm interested in their new Sky speaker. The bookshelf/standmount is currently available. There's a purported floorstander model I'm particularly interested in that could be making an appearance. My focus would be on its bottom-end speed and control. Cheers.

I most probably also stay there, but listening with open ears is always a good thing.

New PMC integrated amp looks tasty.

So it looks like quite a task list, let me see how far I get with this. I tend to also always spent quite some time at the rooms of AVM (because of the guy who is entertaining and the mostly very good system) and MBL, d'Agostini.......

I am sure I will enjoy myself.

I didn't see anything new from Naim. They're sharing a room with Focal who revealed a new Utopia range.

On display only. So no opinion, other than to question why there are so many rooms at an audio show not playing music!

The very small Sky Tower (2k gbp) sounded fantastic. Much better than the more expensive floor standers with the 2x 6 inch drivers which were boomy and muddy sounding.

Did you get to listen to the Atom, Nova and/or Star?

No. Went intonthe Naim partitioned area. Waited for 5 mins or so but no music playing. The show is too big to waste time waiting for someone to be bothered to put some music on.

The best rooms were those where the exhibitor had built false walls to create an ante room so that music could play in the main part and chat could happen in the ante room. Naim had a huge static display area where chat could take place but still the dem room was music free

On a more positive note, Constellation launched the Leo which is a larger competitor to the Muso but sounds 'impressive' rather than tuneful.

Got a chance to catch a couple of demos.

New Utopias are just like the old Utopias. Not my thing at all. They don't seem to have built on the progress made with Sopra.

Uniti Core and Atom into Aria 926. Astonishingly good - very much more musical than the system with the Utopias. Very well controlled and deep bass, lovely smooth vocals, plenty of attack on guitar all joined up into a coherent and tuneful whole.

Unfortunately had to head to the airport before they played the Nova. It would not surprise me if either or both of these out performed Series 5. A back to back comparison would be interesting.

That's really helpful - thank you. As the happy owner of a Uniti 2 and Aria 926's this is really interesting to hear.

I think I will have a listen to the Nova when it comes out as I prefer having an all-in-one system and this sounds like it may take me a bit further. Listening to 96 and 192 tracks via a USB into the Uniti 2 is all I could wish for at present, but I want to make the move to more NAS streaming at some stage and this would coincide with that I hope.

Am I disappointed! No new preamps? No new Classic Range Streamers. No new Dacs?

Right venue, wrong year? Ah - Tardis misconfigured ..

And, just for fun:

Was today for a couple of hours around as I needed to pick up my girlfriend from the airport. Will publish my impressions later. Tomorrow another day. The Naim boot was the ok, but not refreshing. The new Uniti range sounds promising.

One impression I would like to leave our Chord friends with. Heard the Mojo besides the Hugo 2. I don't understand that some people on this forum see the chord Mojo in a same league as the Hugo. For me the Hugo was clearly in a completely different league. So much more mature and refined. This doesn't mean that the Mojo isn't a great product, it is ....however just in a different league...
