Old CD2X with a brand new 555PS DR
Posted by: Emre on 25 May 2017
I like CDs, i buy them, not keep them in addict, like the Japanese wonder formats and i am an addict on buying classic box sets that i barely listen...
I have most of my CD collection on my NAS as well, enjoying them with 272 but when ever i listen from i NAS i start to DJ
With my CD2X i put the album and listen it all while looking at this forum, it gives me a sense of achievement, " i listen my quota of 2 good album for today "
So i like to improve my CD playing.....
I can not find anything used so it is not an option....
Currently i am using my CD2X with a middle eastern PS but considering a brand new 555PS.. the ME PS is not adding much just a little bit more, it is not adding a 555PS to 272 at all, i switched the power supplies the result was disappointing, 272 needs 555PS
What do you think about spending a fortune on a PS for a 8-9 year CD player?
I think you'll find opinions significantly vary about a 555PS on the CDX2. I love my CDX2, but didn't like at all my 555PS connected to it... made the CDX2 too forward and aggressive/Hi-Fi to my ears.

I don't know because I've not heard the combo. If you are only considering new, it may be worth a go.
I arrived progressively at a used Naim CDS3 bought from a Naim dealer and later serviced by Naim. You were recently interested in a new CD555. Then production stopped. If you could find a used CD555 from a dealer, I wonder if you would be happier with that rather than a 555-DR ps for your CD addiction. Failing that, a used CDS3. But you may only want to buy new.
"Upgrading" a CDX2 with a circa £7K PSU? A preposterous notion to me based purely on economics, but I've never heard the combo and it's a consideration beyond my financial means. In your position I'd be demoing stand alone contemporary CDPs that might outperform the combo you're contemplating, possibly at half the cost of the PSU alone, but we all have different means and ends.
There is a simple solution that is entirely free. If the music is on the nas, just play the whole album. Surely it's possible to resist playing being a DJ. Just don't do it. It's not hard.

makes lots of sense
and i struggle to pay that kind of money for better sound from my player..... it is a big money for me as well.
i have also my doubts on new players ( not listen them ) like Hegel Mohican and Bryston, marantaz, all new players of 2017 which makes me wonder how much better they are from my CD2X.....
but the effect of 555 on 272 makes me wonder...
maybe i get a new Brinkmann Bardo Turntable and invest on my analog.....
Have you tried the CDX2 digital output (if yours has one) into the 272? Does that sound better? Perhaps this could save you some money.
The CDX2 with a 555PS is a very exciting listen - maybe too much for some, but if you like it then hard to match or find elsewhere. I'm not sure what the DR version adds to that, but I guess you could always find out...

Why not just invest in more music. You don't have to buy more equipment.
2-3 album a day i have a life time material
Just the Mozart Box will be a year!! and Tidal and new Beatles remasters every 3 year!!
not the quantity but quality
Emre - I actually own both 555PS DR and 555PS (re-capped). Tried both with my CDX2 and in my opinion 555PS non-DR is a better match.
What I would advise is that you search for a pre-loved 555PS and if needed have it re-capped. That's how I bought mine for less than a price of a new XPS DR.
I really liked my CDX2 with an XPS but then had the opportunity to compare a CDS3/XPS with my CDX2 plus a 555PS. I preferred the CDX2/555PS so bought the 555PS. The CDX2 sounded substantially more alive with the bigger power supply to the extent that the change was worthwhile to these cloth ears.
Some time later the mechanism went, so the CDX2 returned to Naim for a new one. My friendly Naim dealer loaned me a CDS3 head unit "to get me by." I still have that head unit to this day. The CDS3/555PS just hit the absolute sonic bullseye for this listener.
Now it's service time for the 555PS, so the decision comes; to DR it or not. Advice from those who have compared the 555PS versus 555PSDR on a CDS3 would be most welcome!
best regards, FT
Emre,
I've read your passionate questions about cd players with interest. I realized today - at least for myself - that I've a kind of emotional connection to spinning cd's too. Most likely because I grew up in the eighties when the CD player got widely accepted. My father bought his first cd player early second half eighties ('87?) and this still sets my direction emotionally. As kid I recognized the much better music (yes, much better than the lp's).
My CD source is not as good as my streaming facilities, but I enjoy it more. Not being DJ, but just 1). put in a disk, 2). push play - do an hour work, 3) get coffee, back to 1). A bit like smoking, but much healthier.
If the PS does not work out perfect on your CDX2, you could use it for other devices easily. Besides the amount of money, there is not much risk in the purpose of a 555 or XPS PS you buy.
You know what ... I might get a better CD Player too ...
Cds are poor mans turntable there days.... they will be fashionable öne day
I dont have a chance to buy used electronics because of custom restrictions in Turkey, i can only go and pick it up and pray for the best
I already own one 555psdr for 272 and selling 555ps and cd2x in Turkey will be close to impossible
It iş so nice to hear diffrent arguments in this forum, mans tnx
Any cd2x/555psdr users out there?
Any one wants to exchange cd2x vs cd555 plus free accomodation in Istanbul, plus some ££££s?
