New Nap 250-2

Posted by: Bob the Builder on 27 May 2017

I have finally taken the plunge and traded in my Nap 200 for a non DR Nap 250-2 (2014) what improvements can I look forward to?

Funnily enough, Simon, I was reluctant to move to 282/250.2 as I was loving the 202/250.2 combo so much.

But yes, the 282/250.2 is a very enjoyable combination and at the current prices a 250.2 is excellent vfm and an excellent amp to boot.

250 of any vintage is always a great amp, and I would rather take any 250  over a 200

Thanks again all for the comments as always a very honest and broad array of answers, I have to say if I had taken all the advice I had been given over the past couple of years from this forum I would have the most fantastic system in the world but wouldn't have a house left to put it in as I would have had to sell it, like many others I have built my system up by buying and selling on the used market.

At 47 and 45 years old my partner and I are slap bang in the middle of our working lives and still heavily into the process of securing a future that doesn't involve being poor and so hifi purchases of any kind must be justified with a sell on price that is pretty much equal to what I paid for them.  I do not and would not buy any luxury purchases on credit,  the perils of the 0% on purchases are plain to see when I talk to family and friends who are paying back high interest credit card debts.

So I think as a Forum whose subscribers come from all walks of life we have a responsibility to have a little heart when it comes to replying to some posts, for example a thread titled 'New Nap 250-2' that reads

'I have finally taken the plunge and traded in my Nap 200 for a non DR Nap 250-2 (2014) what improvements can I look forward to?'

Is obviously from someone who is very much looking forward to receiving an amp he has paid not an insignificant sum for and is looking to share the pride he feels with his fellow forum members of course there are those who disagree with his purchase but the clue is in the title 'WHAT IMPROVEMENTS CAN I LOOK FORWARD TOO?' not what can I not look forward too.

There are some who visit this Forum who are no doubt vunerable to suggestions like 'sell it and buy a DR' and are willing to put themselves into debt to do so.  So just think a little before you reply to some threads because if he could have afforded a DR and is regular visitor don't you think he would have bought one.

So just think before you type!

That's right Bob. There will always be some who will suggest spending more will be better but that philosophy is never ending, and in the words of KD Langley leads to 'Constant Craven '

You can't do better than what you've purchased for sensible money.

I enjoy my 250.2 as you will.

I've tried many amps I didn't enjoy as much, so I'm smugly satisfied!

Constant Beverley Craven. Nightmare.

Indeed. The kd lang song is 'constant craving'.

Bob, as one who has got into a right pickle in the past buying Hifi on credit, I wholeheartedly agree with your logic. However, it still seems odd to buy something without trying it and then asking what improvements you will get. My response is based on the fact that I prefer the 200 to the 250.2 so the only honest answer I can give is 'none'. Which is not to say that you won't think it's fantastic of course.

Chacon as son poussin, as they say in Penge!

The "How" is important, how I made my fortune, how I Structured this Company, how I designed my Amps. There are countless numbers of Extrinsic factors, which accounts for the success of an Hi Fi Manufacture.

However, without the " Intrinsic Why" there would be No Company!

Enjoy your MUSIC, The Why!

Thank You Julian!

Looks like it

For the record - poussin is a young chicken

a French fish is a poisson

and a with accent grave (to quote Little Feat and Paul Barrere), not as.

I also agree that threads can sometimes lose focus. It wasn't so very long ago that the 250.2 was one of THE amps to aspire to in the Naim range and I know that my own personal journey took me some time to be able to justify the outlay to acquire one. I understand that the new 'DR' kid on the block may well offer improvements, but I haven't heard one yet so I am not in a position to judge that. It's easy to keep reading this forum and forgetting that we are often talking about bits of kit that cost thousands of pounds. Having said that the 250.2 does remain a flagship amp having been in production for so long, so it can't be half bad eh! I look forward to hearing a DR version at some stage, although a pre is more in order for me first (also half waiting to see reactions to the new uniti range first). So Bob...enjoy the tunes when you get it and let us know how it sounds to you, I'm sure you will have a grin on your face...and quite right too!!
