Linn Radio channels on UQ iRadio always buffering; due to LAN or WAN?

Posted by: Frank E on 14 August 2011

I've tried to listen to Linn 320kbps stations on iRadio. Both stations are always buffering so are effectively unlistenable. Is anyone else getting this?

All other 320kbps stations are OK deep vibes, AVRO ... and lower bitrate stations.

I was wondering whether it is due to high demand, QoS scheduling in my ethernet switch or ehternet wan gateway Speedtouch ST50v6.I'm on 8Mbps broadband, should be upgraded to ADSL2+ very soon. I only have the Unitiqute, my desktop and the wan gateway on my ethernet switch.

I don't have any protocol analysers to check

You've answered a good portion of the question–all other 320 Kbps stations are OK.

There was a software upgrade from Naim that was installed  a month or so ago on a Unitiqute at a store where I bought mine that fixes the problem, which by the way, does not happen to any other streamer in the store. Apparently there is some discussion as to whether or not there is a problem, hence Dave's response. I can only report that the upgrade as installed by Dave did eliminate the problem on that machine in that store. My own Unitiqute without software updates still has the problem as reported in a thread a couple of months ago. This latest information was shared with Sound Organization, the American importer, just a couple days ago so Dave may not be aware. He is a straight shooter but you are not the only owner puzzled by this one.

I would wait from a response from Naim HQ on this one–there is ongoing software being tested but it is not my place to comment at this time.

My experiences in the field indicate that there are other products which also have issues with the Linn Radio feeds, so it is likely that the buffer issues you are experiencing may be the net result of a combination of factors.

Oh no! there are only 18731 other channels to select from.

The Linn channels are even worse for buffering when trying to listen on desktop media players with my ethernet switch taken out the data signal path, so I'd conclude it isn't the Qute (didn;t suspect it was) or my ethernet switch. Most likely my router, their casting site or something with my link. Odd that some people on this forum have mentioned listening though.

My provivioning order for ADSL2+ upgrade is being processed just now, so only a matter of days until I get ADSL2+ (13.2Mbps est performance). They are improving contention ratio on my link from 50:1 to 20:1 and giving me 200GB per month daytime allowance (no quota at night). I'll get a new router res gateway too, but its unmanagaged and probably not up to much.

I was just surfing the 320k channels and curious to hear what they have on their label. No pressing need to tune in.

I've never had any trouble listening to any of the linn radio stations, and my broadband is at a maximum about 4.5mb/s. 8mb/s should be plenty.

I get about 4.5Mbps max actual too, BW is capped at about 8M 8096kbps

I now have ADSL2+ circa 14 Mbps actual downlaod speed and the stations are still buffering on PC (Winamp /WMP/Real/tunein site), and on Unitiqute, so it's not the Qute.

Expecting delivery of residential gateway later today,a techni-alca-lucen-thomso-color STS585.

I read on a forum somewhere that the update frequency of the metadata may be the cause of the buffering on another piece of equipment, a squeezebox IIRC.

" Metadata interval: 16000 bytes"!

As software was mentioned, when it does come to the time for a firmware upgrade, how are they done?
