Recommend a restaurant near you

'er indoors and I are a bit foodie. We used to go out quite often for meals of variable quality but now go out less but to better restaurants. Last night we celebrated 21 years of marriage with a spectaculary good meal, expensive but worth every penny. So how about a thread recommending great places to eat near you?

Northcote Manor, Langho (between Blackburn and Clitheroe.).

Venue for our meal last night. Pretty pricey (£60/head without drinks approx) and it is a treat for us every few years but always blows us away. A quite modern menu but for all the potential pretention it just works. Brilliant combinations of flavour, texture and colour. For example last night my wife's starter was a ravioli of chicken and tiny pickled plums floating in an intense aromatic chicken consomme. Savoury and warming, yet sharp and tangy. Fabulous. It also never feels too stuck up, with a nice relaxed dining room and staff.

Devonshire Fell Hotel, Burnsall, nr Bolton Abbey, Yorkhire Dales.

Another quite fancy menu but carries it off really well, not least because it is high above Burnsall and has the most marvellous view across the Dales landscape. Note this is not the Michelin starred Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey which is seriously over-rated, and thorougly up its posterior.

Salsa Posada, Harrogate. Compared to the above a truly cheap 'n' cheerful restaurant. Simple but freshly cooked and super tasty mexican food, friendly staff. A place that we have gone to for probably 15 years or more which probably says as much as anything.

We have loads of good places to eat around us but these three stand out.

PS A good restaurant tip for Plymouth would be nice. We have a night in the city later this year before catching a ferry to Spain.

Thanks for the Northcote tip Bruce, it's not far from us.

The finest food we've tasted was either The Square in London or Raymond Blanc's Le Manoir. Best service we've experienced was Le Gavroche - London. Best seafood was at Rick Steins - Padstow.

If you are local how about the Inn at Whitewell. Nice spot and we've had good food there a few times.
