HDX-SSD DOA?

Posted by: gmischol on 15 August 2011

I picked up my new HDX-SSD yesterday. I connect it in the evening and tried to power it up. But I always get the following message:

System error
System services has encountered an error
Cannot communicate with analogue board

Can anyone help or do I have to take it back to the dealer, which is annoying as I have to drive 2 hours for one way

The dealer should install it for you and make sure it works properly in your home

That is an unusual message which may suggest there is an internal problem.  The HDX will sometimes take a little time to settle down after initial startup but I would suspect something is not set up right here.  From what it is saying, it sounds like there may be a problem on the analogue output??

I would phone your dealer this morning, but I would suspect the dealer probably would need to liaise with Naim on this one.

It's a shame your initial play with the HDX has been hampered, but stick with it, it really is a fantastic piece of equipment when up and running properly.

I too had about an hour of not getting mine to run properly when I first used it, it seems to just need time after first switch on to settle down and set itself up, but after letting it do that and then powering down and a fresh start, it played perfectly ever since!

I hope this issue is resolved quickly for you.

All the best.

Check things like the Burndy connector are fitted correctly and snugly (do this with unit powered OFF).  If it still gives the same message then contact your supplying retailer.

Link plug, or, loose PCI card - dealer can sort #2, you can sort #1

SJB, why interesting?  Does "contact your dealer" sound better?

Indeed it does.

It may be semantics but a nationwide coverage of supplying retailers doesn't have the same ring as a national dealership.

Perhaps it's not meant,

perhaps your'e implying that a dealer who doesn't install a HDX is not a rose by another name smelling as sweet,

perhaps the long established realtionship between manufacturer/dealer (retailer)/ customer is breaking down,

perhaps I've too much time on my hands!

In my humble opinion, this should be a dealer install - it costs £4,000 so if I bought one I'd expect it installed and working - not presented as a challenge for me to sort out.

When I bought my my fridge it came with a promise of installation, but the guys who arrived seem to think that was just delivery - they didn't want to wire it in or check it was working and expected me to carry my old fridge on to the drive. My reply was simple: hold on while I phone to cancel my order and you can take it away. 15 minutes later they had installed it to my satisfaction and loaded the old fridge on their lorry and I gave both of them a cup of tea, cake and tip for their work - also phoned their boss to say I was very happy with the service.

I would expect nothing less if I ordered the HDX.

Unless the OP has requested the dealer not to visit him then I would expect the dealer to arrive with a replacement unit in the next few days and ensure it was all working to the customers satisfaction.

Sorry, but this is Naim kit we are discussing from the best hi-fi manufacturer on the planet - hence we expect top notch service, which is what in my experience I always get without any need for a song or dance.

Thanks for all your suggestions and thoughts. The dealer didn't install it at my home because I just couldn't wait to have it and listen to it. So I picked it up myself.

But anyway I called the dealer this morning, he checked with the distributor and called me back to tell me they will send a replacement and he will install it himself to be sure everything is ok.

Thanks

It sounds like the device is telling you exactly what is wrong, I expect a ribbon cable is loose somewhere.

Excellent - now that is what I call a good dealer.

You'll love it when it is working - great piece of kit.

All the best, Guy

So, the HDX has finally been replaced by the dealer and everything is fine now, just enjoying the music, and it definitely is an improvement over my HDX with internal HDs

gmischol,

May I ask what kind of improvement are you talking about? If it is about the faster reaction times of operation because of ssd drive, yes;... but if you are talking about sonic improvement, I suspect it is because your earlier HDX did not have the latest sound card.
