Upgrade speaker cable
Posted by: b-2017 on 01 June 2017
Hello
My actual configuration is nat 5si -> dali opticon 6 and I use the cable "supra rondo 4x2.5"
I want to upgrde the cables but I need to decide between following cables ,
1- AudioQuest FLX/SLiP 14/4
2- AudioQuest Star Quad Type 4
3- NAiM nac5
Does anyone has any experience to compare these three cables because I read a lot of good review about AudioQuest more specially about FLX/SLiP 14/4 and if Star Quad Type 4 has more benefit compared to FLX/Slip and nac5 compared to two both AudioQuest and does the cable length matters any more ?
Thanks
Personally I wouldn't be too bothered by the manufacturer of the solder - just so long as it's a near eutectic mix. In my experience different solders only make a quantum change in audio performance, whereas soldering technique can make a massive change - particularly if the solder hasn't flowed properly or the joint is mechanically disturbed while the solder in a paste state (hence eutectic mixes being better).
Pb60 Sn40 solder is a little easier (than Sn99 Ag0.3 Cu0.7) to use on joints that can be formed quickly (due to the lower melting point); but it also oxidises more quickly at temperature so if you can't work fast it can actually be harder to get a good joint.
It's possible to buy lead solder, and I'd agree that it's easier to do a good job with it, although I'm surprised to hear that Naim are using it given the regulations. I also like WBT-0800 which is leaded, with 4% silver.
I seem to recall that Naim were using vapour capture on soldering stations in the early 1990's, so they were ahead of the game even then.
Also, some electronic components have very short lead heat times at 230°C (min reliable flow temp for Sn99 Ag0.3 Cu0.7)

Me too, however I suspect the majority of Naim solder is in PCB wave soldering machines from their outside suppliers & will be lead free & similar/same as Sn99 Ag0.3 Cu0.7
Last time I visited the factory they were using their own wave bridge soldering machine.

The EU regulation was driven largely by the dangers of lead after disposal, not just during assembly. Perhaps Naim were able to demonstrate that their products weren't just chucked in a Chinese landfill site after a couple of years like so much consumer electronics is?
They might make a few PCB in house, but I believe its limited. Last time I was there I spent a while talking with the guys who design & make the PBC testing rigs for use by the outside suppliers.
It was a long time ago, perhaps I need a refresh visit! ![]()

You have to use it for servicing on anything that originally used leaded solder. You shouldn't mix leaded and unleaded solders.
IIRC the sales guys prefer using it for soldering up speaker connectors on site because it's easier to handle and get a good strong solder joint.
From what I've gather as information , I'll use the Pb60 Sn40 solder , because it's easier to apply , remove( in case of making a mess )
and last longer
60/40 Tin/Lead solder is what you want - the other stuff (unleaded) with NAC A5 in my experience is just utter pants, to be quite frank. "Sorry but it has to be said"
Hi everybody
Thanks for your help , I made the fconnection at last and it's connected and running know. I have a pair of Monitor audio bronze 6 that I use them for my home cinema I was planning to buy a speaker switch but after the research I'm thinking to buy a power amp , the connection will be this way nait 5si HD out -> home cinema (pioneer lx59 ) analog 1 -> home cinema front speaker -> naim power amp , does it has any benefit and if it has what the power amp should I buy ( for me the nait 5si power is good enough ), is there another configuration that is better than that ?
Thanks
