How do you play a playlist?
Posted by: haggis999 on 02 June 2017
I can see how to add tracks to a newly created playlist in the Naim app but I have failed to find any way to actually play this playlist (nor can I find a user guide for this app). What am I missing?
In case it is relevant, I am using a Naim NAC-N 272.
Tap first item in playlist.....
You misunderstand my problem. I can't see how to display the playlist, so tapping the first item is not yet a possibility for me. So far, I can only see how to add tracks to a playlist.
Have you got the 'tap for options' on in 'other settings' in the settings menu?
Yes, that option is set on.
I think I might have discovered the answer to my own problem. I came right out of browsing my music (served by MinimServer) on the Naim app, where I had saved tracks to a new playlist, and then noticed that the home page had a link to UPNP PLAYLISTS.
Perhaps there is a good reason for this, but it's not very intuitive to have such a wide separation between creating and playing a playlist!
I suppose it's not entirely intuitive to access UPnP playlists from outside of the UPnP input, but that's the way it is. I guess it separates them from playlists created and stored on the server, which would be accessed in a folder in the UPnP menu. Still....now you know!
I've just discovered something else to tax my aging brain. After creating a playlist, I edited the title of one of the tracks and the original track title is now marked in the playlist with a red cross and can't be played. However, I have failed to find any way of removing this item from the playlist. Am I just expected to delete the playlist and start again from scratch?

Tap the red cross and then delete. Hopefully you can then add the track to the playlist again.

That was the first thing I tried. It has no effect on the Android tablet that I normally use for running the Naim app.
Just on a whim, I opened up the app on my iPad (where I had also created a similar UPnP playlist) and found that tapping the red icon did indeed give me an option to delete the track. It therefore appears that Naim has a bug in the Android version of their app (a test on my Android smartphone showed the same unresponsive red cross icon).
Must be an issue with the Android app, probably worth telling Naim as they might be able to fix it next time they release an app update.

I've already done that. I sent an email to support@naimaudio.com early this afternoon. I've no idea how often they issue updates to the app, so it will be interesting to see how long it takes before this bug is fixed.
There is a problem with playlists you made with the naim-app and minimserver. After refreshing the minimserver the playlist don't work. So if you use minimserver you have to make your playlists with another app for example vlc-player and save them to your libary so that minimserver can index them. Playlists with naim-app and minimserver only work until next refreshing minimserver. Or you use another UPNP-server.

I have a Naim app playlist (for demoes) and use Minim. Refreshing has no impact on the playlist whatsoever. Very occasionally a track will go red-cross, but it's very rare and very random.
I am rapidly learning more about playlists. After CHRISSU made a reference above to server-based playlists, I realised that playlists created via the Naim app are local to the device you are using at that time, so I checked the MinimServer forum for any guidance on server-based playlists. I found an old thread in which Simon Nash, the author of MinimServer, recommended using Oddgravity Playlist Creator.
I have now downloaded that app (it's Windows only) and found that it works very well. It proved necessary to configure Playlist Creator as follows:
- Added the .dsf filetype (flac files were already in the default configuration)
- Chose relative paths for the playlist entries (this was actually the default)
- Selected forward slashes instead of back slashes
- Defined a target location on my NAS that was already indexed by MinimServer
- Took the option to save the playlist in .m3u format, rather than the default of .pls
Playlist Creator makes it very easy to edit and combine existing playlists. After any such updates you then need to run a Rescan process on MinimServer.
