Airplay 2 and the Mu-so
Posted by: Paul Baker on 06 June 2017
Judging by the press release from Naim regarding the launch of Airplay 2 it seems as though there will not be any support for the Mu-so range of products. If this is the case then its very disappointing. I own two mu-so's and a Qb and I've all but given up on trying to multi-room with them. I love the look and also the sound from the Mu-so but they have to go now...I've had 16 months of frustration and there seems to be little light at the end of the tunnel.

They confirmed in comments on their Facebook announcement that this won't be supported on the Mu-so ("normal" and Qb).
Thanks for letting me know. That's really disappointing, given the multi-room flexibility of the smaller Qb speakers.
Moderated Post: Paul, please be respectful of forum rules. Thanks.
I use a SuperUniti and 2 QB's in one of my setups and multiform works a treat.
What's the problem(s) you have Paul?
It's the Airplay 2 announcement that Paul is referring to Blythe, not current Naim multiroom (which works well between my NDX and my Qbs).
Paul, sorry to hear of the problems you have had with multi room with your Mu-sos. This is usually down to network problems and may well be something that can be sorted out relatively easily. Have you been in touch with Naim support on this?
Thanks for the replies. I have spoken with Naim Support on numerous occasions. I've had the units hard wired, running through wifi - I've set them up with an Apple Time Capsule, then linked them directly with a HomeHub 5, upgraded to a HomeHub 6, all to no avail. I have used a Net Analyser to check on the Bonjour status. Every airplay device shows up in the control centre of the iOS device as soon as I swipe up with the exception of the Mu-so's. They take anywhere from 30 secs to 3 minutes to appear. I'm in a new house with thin walls, one Mu-so is 6 feet away from the router and the other is on the other side of an open plan room. I can airplay all day from an iOS device to an Apple TV 4 - This is connected to the TV which in turn is connected to the Mu-so. But you have no Multi-room functionality doing it this way and you need the TV to be on. I've spent £2,300 and I have had nothing but frustration, to the point where its taken all the goodness out of it. As a final measure to rule out my network settings I set it up in an Apartment that I have for work. Same issues.
Not sure why Naim would not (could not?) integrate Airplay 2 with Muso & Qb. I'm having similar issues with multi-room from their app. I have a Muso & then bought a Qb to play both in the same open plan area but its not happening. I'm in the middle of support back and forth. My wifi signal is good but I believe its a software issue. At the suggestion of support I tried the Qb plugged into an ethernet port (next to router) and the Muso working via wifi. With either the Muso or Qb as primary source the music would drop out every 15 seconds or so. I have different IP's for each as that seemed to be a fix but to no avail. Hoping support comes back with some other options, but honestly it shouldn't be that difficult to do something that Naim says it can. To quote from the web site,
"Combine Mu-so with other Mu-so Qb wireless music systems or Naim Audio streaming products for the ultimate multiroom experience.Simply sync the units to play the same song beat-for-beat in up to five rooms of your home or play different music in different rooms all via the Naim app."
They need some sort of fix otherwise they need to change the claim as its just not accuarate, without a lot of disclaimer.
I'll flag your posts. Network problems can be really frustrating - hopefully Phil and co. can figure it out.
Very disappointed to read the Muso won't have AirPlay2 support!!!
... and presumably then the NDX-streamer series will then also not be AirPlay2 supported, or am I overlooking something here? Thanks in advance,
Stefan

Have you considered trying Roon, its multi room is exceptional and it plays to Airplay devices.
If nothing else a trial will confirm whether the issue is wifi or not.

Hi Sloop John B. I'd never heard of Roon before now, so I googled it. The 1st page I clicked on gave a good review and was really positive until.......Multiroom!
"To Apple’s credit, AirPlay is widely supported and can be found in a number of powered speakers and A/V receivers. I did a limited amount of wireless streaming using the new Wren V5US powered speaker and the even newer Naim Mu-so soundbar and experienced some troubling dropouts on both speakers. It’s impossible to pinpoint exactly which point device in the chain is responsible for this; it could have been the Roon software, the AirPlay protocol, my Wi-Fi network, or the endpoints themselves.
The folks at Roon Labs say my AirPlay experience isn’t typical, but I can’t recommend using Roon and AirPlay as a multi-room audio system unless positive experiences from other reviewers indicate my experience really was an anomaly"
For £2k I really shouldn't have to be experiencing this, It should just work. End of story. Its not wifi as I get the same issues when I take the Mu-so's to a different property .

Hi Paul,
Have you spoken to anyone here regarding your issues with getting multi-room working on your Mu-sos? We have a dedicated Mu-so support team, have they not been able to assist? What are the issues that you are having?
Normally any issues tend to be down to underlying network infrastructure (routers or wireless access points not properly supporting multicast for discovery for example or using Ethernet over Mains devices which we have seen giving problems before).
What router are you using? Has it got the latest manufacturers firmware on it?
What firmware versions are your Mu-sos and Qb running?
How are you connecting your Mu-sos and Qb to your router? WiFi? Direct Ethernet connection? Ethernet Over Mains?
Are you using any WiFi extenders / repeaters? (These too can often cause issues as they can massively reduce the throughput on WiFi networks but quite often they are just seen as "boosters" without any downsides and so just get thrown in without understanding how they work and how they can affect things.)
If you can drop me an email at support@naimaudio.com then perhaps we can try to diagnose the issues that you are having?

Hi Whalley,
It seems that you are already on to the Mu-so support team so I will contact them to see if they need assistance with your issue ...
I understand that it's obviously frustrating when something doesn't work as you expect but we do have many tens of thousands of these units out in use and they don't use any protocols or have any specific network requirements that are "unusual" and we do normally find that any issues are related to underlying network problems.
