How to connect 282 > HCDR > new 300DR??

Posted by: Tallan on 06 June 2017

Finally placed an order yesterday for a new NAP 300DR to replace the 200 powering my Davone Grande loudspeakers.  Looking ahead at the instruction manual and  connection guide PDFs online at Naim I see clear instructions for connecting the 282 + HiCapDR to a 250DR, but nothing about how to accomplish the same thing with a 300DR.  It's clear from photos that the 300DR has two separate inputs, one for each channel, unlike my existing 200 (or the 250DR).

So, how will I get my new amp connected?  What cabling comes in the boxes, and how do the inputs on the 300DR connect to the HiCapDR's outputs?   (The Burndys I can pretty much figure out, I think ).

You'll get a pair of 4pin din to xlr leads with the 300. They will plug into the 4pin sockets next to the 5pin on the hicap. It doesn't matter which way round in the HC but there are left and right xlrs which need to be plugged in to the corresponding sockets on the 300. Get them the wrong way round and you'll get no sound

Enjoy your new 300 btw [@mention:50703968577826429]

Thanks for the quick reply, and the good wishes on the new 300DR - I'm pretty excited, as you can imagine, to get this kit in place and started running in.

One question: you say "Get them the wrong way round and you'll get no sound."  Are they marked or is it trial & error time?

No, they'll be marked. Enjoy!

Thanks again, Finkfan!

You're welcome! How long is the wait for the new amp?

Posted on: 06 June 2017 by Tallan

I haven't heard yet, but I know they are in stock here in the States so it shouldn't be too much longer than a week or ten days.  Fingers crossed, anyway!

Naim has this PDF with connections on their website. 282 with NAP 300 is there as well.

If you cannot find it, just drop me an emial (my email is in my profile) and I will send it over.

If one day you decide to buy xlr/din SL cables you need 2!

Exciting purchase. Helps to think of the connection to the 300 like for mono amps i think. I have to avoid reading 250DR vs 300 threads as I'd need three of them and that would really put a strain on the finances!

Ahmmmm....

just got a confirmation of my 300's delivery date - end of June.

Don't even want to think about SL DIN-XLR interconnects (x2!!!!)

Thanks, Adam, but I just looked again and the 300 is only listed twice, 252 + Supercap + 300 and 272 + 555PS + 300, neither of which was much help.  But Finkfan has explained it above so I think I'm all set.

Still waiting to hear from my dealer when I can expect delivery but yesterday he assured me the 300 is in stock with Naim's US distributor.  We'll see... I've been waiting a couple of years to make this purchase so I don't think another week or two (or even three) will bother me too much.

Ouch!  Sadly any number of Super Lumina cabling is but a pipe dream for me right now.  After the 300DR is bedded in I start saving for NDS + 555PS and unless I get lucky with the lottery that's going to take a good long time.  THEN premium cable upgrades, if I live so long...

[@mention:50703968577826429] - I stand corrected - 282 + 300 is not in my connection guide. Finkfan's decription is spot on - you need sockets 2 and 3 for the connections to your NAP 300.

There's a reason Naim don't provide a connection guide for the 282/300. Just search the forum for fish-related posts.......

Sorry! It was an obtuse reference to your arguably mullet-like approach to system building. Naim's connection guide describes systems as they might envisage them being used with their 'natural partners' (whatever that means.) So you'll see connections for 282/HC/250, and for 252/SC/300.

Now I'm not saying that rules like this can't be broken, but if I was in your position, I think I'd want to listen to a 252/SC as a possible next step and compare it to the 282/HC/300 before committing.

Don't worry, 282 Hi Cap and 300 is a great sounding combo. I know, I've heard it many times. In fact Naim have demoed this combo in the past.

Tallan, I really admire your patience and decision, by-passing the 250 DR!

I agree, I'm in the process of exercising, that same type of patience you've just demonstrated!

Perhaps, I will pay you visit, when I purchase my SCDR! LOL...

Enjoy your Music!

I know, the 200 ain't bad!

PS. The 252 doesn't have to follow!

The 300 has two XLR connections meaning (not sure but most probably) separated grounds for left and right channel as most Naim equipment is using star earthing. Think the answer on your question is much related to the topic:

NAC 282 Upgrade possibilities (DIY)

as the NAP 300 probably is a dual mono power amplifier.
