Hugo 1 Volume level

Posted by: daveyu on 07 June 2017

I have NDX => Hugo 1 => Conrad Johnson Pre-amp

What are the "recommended" volume settings for the Hugo

Set the Hugo to Line level output via Crossfeed and on/off switch or

Set the volume of the Hugo via Volume knob as required.

Thanks in advance.

With Naim amps, forum members have tended to report better results when not using the fixed volume setting. Opinion is divided as to which colour is "better". Play around a bit to see which you prefer.

If you try a forum search you will find some good write-ups on the point, including by Simon-in-Suffolk. [NB - if, like me, you are colour-blind, they won't help you at all. Cyan - what?]

Personally I saw no point in tbe fixed output, and when I used through a preamp I set on the oft-recommended turquoise/cyan -ish colour. Subsequently I used mine without a preamp direct into power amp, and simply used the volume control exactly as that.

I would also suggest as Nickpeacock has suggested and play around. Otherwise if you can hear no difference then choose a setting that gives a similar sound level to other sources you might use, to minimise any need for main volume control changes if you select a different input to the preamp.

As I understand it the fixed output does not disable the volume control, what does it do?, set the volume 2V (or 3V) above the maximum volume

obtained using the volume control?

I tried cyan, but had to crank the volume setting on the pre-amp above what i normally use, can't remember what colour i settled on, one

that gave me a "normal" listening volume with my usual pre-amp volume setting

Bit of a pain that the Hugo does not remember your settings tho'

When I had my Hugo I just left it on all the time, other than about once a month discinnecting from mains to allow the battery to run down to maintain health - that way the not remembering volume control setting if you want it to remain static would be less of a pain. I guess that's what the line output setting is for, because IIRC it does remember that (?)

indeed I found the turquoise sounded best with Naim NACs- and for what ever reason it was not just about having a larger amount of play on the NAC volume pot which i prefer anyway. However with non Naim preamps you shouldn't assume this behaves the same way  so trial and error
