BubbleUPnP's seek slider doesn't work with Naim NAC-N 272

BubbleUPnP has some advantages over the Naim app as a control point, but I've only just discovered that BubbleUPnP's seek slider doesn't work with my Naim NAC-N 272. If I try using the slider to fast forward through a track, I get a small popup message saying 'Seek mode not supported (code: 710)'.

I found a post in this forum from nearly 2 years ago about a similar problem with the Muso. It quoted BubbleUPnP's developer as saying the error message came from the Naim renderer. Naim's network players are UPnP/DLNA devices and the seek slider works in Naim's own app, so why are they not playing well with other UPnP/DLNA control points?

The Seek protocol doesn't appear to be well implemented in DLNA 1.5, there are compatibility problems between many different control points and renderers/players.

I suspect this may be one of the areas where there is ambiguity in the specification of the protocols (there are a few of these known to exist in DLNA).

I've used BubbleUPnP with 5 other DLNA renderers, all of which handled seek requests correctly, so Naim does seem to be a little out of step here.

I find that rather disappointing (and irritating), as my Naim kit is by far the most expensive network player I have ever used!

Unless you know which conventions  for the various functions are in use by each manufacturer, then which pairings work and which don't will in effect be random.  BTW it's not only the Seek function that has some ambiguity in the DLNA specification.

(This situation occurred because DLNA grew organically with many manufacturers developing their own flavours of DLNA 1.0, then  different manufacturers incorporating different (or the same) features implemented in different ways into V 1.1, then gain for 1.2....  rather than it being designed by a single authority from the start.  So DLNA is effectively a collection of specifications and protocols.)

Despite the messy history of DLNA, every other DLNA renderer I have tried works fine with BubbleUPnP's seek slider. In addition to the total of 5 such renderers I mentioned in my last post, I can now add my 6-year-old Panasonic Viera plasma TV and Foobar2000 on my Windows PC to the list.

I think Naim could try a little harder to catch up with the pack on this...

Oh, yes, this is on my wish list for long. Being able to seek from BubbleUPnP would be great.

Also it would be more than nice if playlist management was not handled proprietary but instead the openhome standard was used for this.

Yes, Bubble UPnP, Linn Kazoo, Lumin, Audionet, ... all fine with upmpdcli. The Naim app doesn't. I do not really care as Bubble UPnP and Kazoo are fine but it seems a rather unnecessary flaw.

It seems to me that quite a few threads on this forum raise issues about missing features or bugs in the Naim app, but it's unclear if Naim ever reads and reacts to such comments. Does anyone maintain a more visible wishlist that consolidates all update requests for the Naim app?

BTW, when I emailed Naim recently about the bug with the Android version of the app (see above), I was told that "the ability to delete and move tracks within playlists in the Android app has not been implemented but is due for a later release". When I pressed for some indication of timescale, the Naim rep said that he "had no schedules for the implementation of specific functionality within the Android app".

Can anyone point me towards a list of all previous app updates, so that I can get an idea of update frequency (on both Android and iOS)?

There isn't such a list. Naim has its hands full at the moment so it's unpredictable when they release anything. But they will want the Android app to support metadata editing in the Core, which it doesn't at the moment. I would guess that those sort of things and integration with the new Unitis will take priority though.

The IOS app is generally one or two releases ahead of the Android one. But the same comment. They have lots of software work to do without going to their customers' new features wish list.
