Samsung TV - NAC252 - CYP DAC - drop out in sound??

Posted by: rkind on 13 June 2017

Hi

Newbie to the forum hoping someone can help.

I have a new(ish) Samsung TV plugged into my NAC252 (new to me, but second hand) via a CYP AU-D3-192 DAC, which was recommended by and purchased from a Naim main dealer. I have Ovator S400s and didn't want, or need, a sound bar or surround sound due to expense and clutter.

The sound is very good, but every 30 seconds or so the sound dips, and then back to normal.

I've looked at all the menus on the TV and set the sound to PCM, which I've seen recommended on the forum (it was the default in any case). I've moved the DIN around on the back of the 252, but always the same result.

Would anyone have any idea as to how I resolve the sound dipping issue?

Many thanks

Perhaps it's worth speaking to the dealer who recommended the dac.

Dealer seemed to think the DAC wouldn't make a difference. Unfortunately i'm not well versed in the technicals, so wouldn't know if that were true or not

Does the telly have analogue stereo outputs? If so, try connecting them to the Naim. If it works ok you'll know there's something wrong with the digital side. If you just listen to the telly through its own speakers is the sound ok?

I used one of these to connect a Panasonic digital out to a 82 a couple of years ago it worked well.

As HH said see if you have any analogue outputs on the TV if none fitted you could try the headphone output on the TV if fitted and you have the correct lead if not back to your dealer.

From the description there would appear to be a synchronisation problem between the digital out of the TV and the DAC. The DAC might be seeing an 'unstable' digital source and has a problem synchronising the clocks.

I would try running an analogue out from the TV into the 252 (beware of ground loop hums though - I'm betting a pint of warm English ale against a cold Polish vodka this will happen )

Thank you

TV has only Optical, a couple of spare HDMIs and a couple of USB ports, and speakers are fine.

Looks like it's a visit back to the dealer.

I do also have an Arcam rPAC DAC which I use for my PC into another very old Naim Pre/power (selling Naim CD5). The cable that came with this is USB at source end - cable is not long enough to connect 252 & Samsung in the above, but do you think this would work even though this DAC appears to be solely for PC to preamp

Apologies, sounds like I just downed your warm English ale and cold Polish vodka, but trying to think of all possibilities

new tv's doesn't have any analog outputs (except headphone), mostly HDMI and optical for audio-stereo. My Panasonic plasma has been connected to the ND5XS via optical cable and there are no problems at all with sound etc. The only solution for an external dac is an optical output at your tv.

SPDIF Output:Menu → Sound → SPDIF Output → Audio Format → Set to PCM

did you check this setting at your tv?

Could you perhaps rephrase the question? I'm a bit lost....
