Hi Cap DR
Posted by: ndx202- on 18 June 2017
Hi am thinking of getting a Hi Cap DR to power my Stageline purchase.
I have 2 questons..
Does the DR regulator board need servicing every 7-10 years like the older Hi Cap .. I know that the main resevoir caps will need doing as usual but are there any tantalum caps on the new Discrete regulator board..
My second question is well making my decision on my new Hi Cap ' will the Nac 82 power the MM Stageline ?
If so which socket do I it plug in to ? . If not what do I need ??
Thanks all replys appreciated..
I think they now say every 15 years.
The 82 cannot power a Stageline. It can have internal phono boards fitted, which should be just as good.

Thanks HH I think I will run the from the stageline on the hi cap I have , and the nac82 from the nap185 for the time being and eventually get another Hi Cap.. Will a supercap power a pre and a stageline ??
Thanks
The line boards are working fine in the 82 but for some reason that I cannot fathom the na522/4 board sound shut in ' quiet and tonally pretty dead when fitted.. It is a a later nac 82 serial no 2002. Have posted and rang Naim about it. Maybe there has been a mod to the 82 ' But cannot see any thing in there that should not be.. Posted photos to Naim and although only so much can be seen in photos they agreed it looked normal .. It has been said there had been a RCA socket mod at some point as it it does not have BNC sockets on input 1.. they seem good quality though and a good job has been done..Probably for convinience of other line inputs.. Guess i might send the boards back to Naim to be checked over..Oh incidentally external phono stage working beautifully externally on input 1...So perplexed..
All the best

No, it won't.

There's your answer.

..how are your boxes arranged? You need to keep an 82 clear of a PSU. Low-level interference can definitely give a 'sat-on' quality to the sound with the low frequencies being especially badly effected. My own 82 does not like to 'share' a plug either.

I have a good quality Merlin plug distribution unit and a Funnelweb mains lead..The Hi Cap and NAPSC are on a separate table away from the Nac 82.. and 16ins or so away from each other...Streaming ' CD etc all sound lovely natural warmish and full.. The amp is much better than the nac112x I used to own. and The 180 power amp is so much more organic than the 150x.. If I could drop a photo on this reply I would but the Hoopla site seems not to allow it...??? I have noticed that the line boards use less pins than the na522 /4 boards which seem seem to use all of them ?? Have checked all the connections and think the next move will be to send the pre amp and the boards back to Naim to let them see if there is anything less obvious..
Have just moved the NAPSC as far away from the pre as is physically possible...Huge difference to everything Streaming wise ' much better ..Will try the phono stage now... See what happens..Thanks Desktop..Wil get back to you..
Have just set the arm up Alphaon Opal linn k9.. My o My that little box being away from the 82 makes a huge difference everything has opened up..Now I know what is meant by sensitive electronics.. Richard said that their may be some arm adjustments needed last week ..It was indeed to high and sucking the life out of the sound too..Sorry Richard my apologies if you read this..

glad you've made some progress. My 82 was troubled by sitting right on top of a Supercap - it didn't hum, so I assumed everything was OK. Later on, when I went over to headphone listening entirely, I placed my redundant 180 between the 82 and Supercap. The difference was substantial. My other boxes are spaced out, and no proper rack, but I've not really tried moving the PSC. Where a psu connects to the mains in relation to other boxes can have an influence in addition to spatial relationships.
Treat the PSC like any other Naim power supply. No need for any special treatment for this unit.
Just looked inside the AR Turntable. There was the problem..!!!!. Damping material everywhere.!!!. What a mess..!!! on the plinth the base everywhere..!! Took it off ...The sound ha come back..Why do people think that stuff works and them put it everywhere apart from the stylus..
All the money that goes into research and development and people put crappy tar all over the place...Vibration cant get away from the deck quickly enough hence the dead horrible sound...
HA HA
Damping in the turntable was the main issue..Secondhand and who ever had put it in had put it everywhere..Took it out
Just took the "DIY "RCA Gold rubbish sockets and replaced with good quality BNC connectors as it should have.. The sound has improved again..
Put the 522/3 boards back in am very happy with the sound .. Think think the internal boards and stageline are very similar and pleasing.. The Stageline with Hi Cap powering it was bound to be a bit more of everything. Maybe a bit sharp but it is brand new..
Just need another Hi Cap to power the Pre now..
Stageline going back to retailer and keeping the lovely NA 322/4 boards ..prefer their sound. Have put a brand new Ortofon 2m Blue on the Alphason Opal arm ' The AR (THE TURNTABLE ) sounds fab now.. Combination of a lot of things led to bad sound.. The sound damping was the main issue.. Should be banned.. Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions..

Short and concise answer...

Thanks for listening when I questioned the age of the Linn K9. Glad all has worked out.
I am a electronoic's engineer Christopher_m .. All pretty simple really

This forum is ok most of the time.. The rest of it trying to sell or service stuff.. Baby stuff I can do myself.. of no use whatsoever..

Yes they are that good I have parted with the Stageline
The trouble with tweaks such as the turntable damping is that to one person something can be an improvement, and to another the same thing is perceived as killing the sound - it all depends on what the individual's preference as to how the music should sound and what may be the effect of the rest of their system (including room).
Personally I would have thought that the last thing anyone would want would be resonances in the turntable as they could be picked up by the stylus. Presumably that as why someone had added the damping material, and one assumes that if it was added by a previous user then s/he must have liked the result or would have immediately removed it!
Yes innocent bystander I agree that one mans meat can be another mans poison.. But in this case the amount of damping used and the totally random way it was placed did affect the sound very adversly..I thought their may be something wrong with the 52/4 boards ' even turntable setup was questioned on this forum.. I have owned a few turntables in the last 35 years and have owned three of the current model "The AR Turntable".. I have owned a few Sondek's in my time too ' and the AR to my ears is much more pleasing.. This is why i was so suprised that it all sounded so bad..
The main thing is that the damping 'was not isololated to the plinth !" ' there was damping on the cross member that holds the bearing.. That is what killed the sound . The sound has opened up imessurably now and sounds as I expect..
The little Alphason Opal arm has been on a few decks so I kind of understand its sound.. I bought it in preference to a linn Ittok ' which I expected to sound better to my ears but did not..
Anyway am going to change the stylus at some point probably ' Would like a nice Supex mm ' as I do like their sound. This was the brand that Linn used for a good while.. Don't even know if they are produced now. Getting an old one could be dodgy as the rubber around the stylus is prone to hardening..
Thanks for your interest...

That's good - one fewer box to worry about. I've always found the Stageline distinctly underwhelming. The Prefix was the best though, fitted into the LP12.
