SL2 boxing up for shipping--help needed!

Posted by: aht on 21 June 2017

I am trying to box up my vintage SL2 speakers for shipment to a new location.  I have all the original boxes and packing materials, a PDF of the manual which contains unpacking instructions, and Richard's setup instructions.  Unfortunately, I can't quite figure out how all the pieces nest together, particularly the tweeter suspension assembly.  Does anyone have any photos?  I see that Thomas K posted a photo in a thread in 2007, but the picture link is now dead, and he seems to have left the forum in 2011. There is also an "SL2 boxing up and reassembly" thread from 2013, in  which HTM_1968 suggested that the manual unboxing instructions, read in reverse, are sufficient, but it doesn't work for me without pictures.

AHT, it has been some years since I had to box or unbox a pair of SL2s, but IIRC the tweeter arm fits on top to one side and there are small holes/channels in the foams which will show you how it goes.

I recently bought some SL2s from someone who knew how to pack them and I took photos as I unboxed them. I can send you those if you want, but will need an email address.

The tweeter is inside the cardboard packaging with the tweeter support arm running along the top edge of the box and held in the foam slots. More to follow.

This saves the email and might help in the future!

Good job.  Well done Clive.

I'll try and explain but I have no pictures.  There is a large white foam piece that you stretch over the base of the bottom box. Then there is a large foam piece the sits on top of the bottom box. That all gets placed into the carton first. Then from memory, their must be another foam end piece that goes at the other extreme end of the carton. Then the top box with the mid bass driver facing up gets placed into the carton, against the foam inserts already in the box. I think there is a cardboard sheet that then sits on top of the front baffle to protect the main driver.

There is also a small cardboard square box that wraps around the tweeter. The whole tweeter arm then some how fits into some cut out slots of all the foam that is separating the two boxes. Here is where the care has to be taken so that the steel tweeter arm does not knock or touch the wood cabinet of the speakers. The grills then go into a cardboard sleeve that gets inserted down the edge of the carton.

Remember to remove the spikes first and keep all the PIP's and short rods in a snap lock bag.

hope this makes some sense, as I realise its a little hard to visualise without pictures, but if you have all the packaging in front of you, there is a good chance you will put the puzzle together.

regards Mario.

Whoops, Clive beat me to it, and with pics.

Mario's advice about the spikes, PiPs etc is important. The packaging is also designed to hold the speakers with the x-overs removed - my passive x-overs were in a separate box.

Clive,

Great work!

It would be fascinating to see how your new SL2s look in situ any any updates on how the set up is going or went.

Kind regards

David

Excellent. Can this be included in the FAQ?

Sure thing, just so long as Clive is happy for me to use his images.

Of course - I'm happy to be of help. It might be worth adding the point about the passive x-overs needing to be removed.
