Chord Mojo into Naim Uniti advice please...
Posted by: The Dude on 02 July 2017
Morning,
Hope all is well.
I have a Uniti with upgraded 192 board (spotify etc) a Nap 250 , Spendor A6s ...I would like to try and connect my Mojo with a view to sampling it's delights...is this possible?
Many thanks Giles.
Hi The Dude,
In order to use your Mojo you would need a Digital Output from Naim Uniti (which is not available on the Uniti range).
An easy way to sample the capabilities of the Mojo into your NAP 250 would be to connect your Smart Phone/PC/MAC to Mojo to NAP 250 and stream Spotify in this manner.
Hope others would contribute with more ideas.
Cheers, Vik
Thank you Vic...what about a analogue to digital converter ? And connect my mojo into this?
Source (PC, smart-phone etc), with lossless audio files (FLAC, WAVE, ALAC, AIFF)
> Chromecast Audio
> Optical 'cable'
> Mojo
> Analogue cable
> Uniti
This will give you much better quality than Spotify as the Chomecast Audio uses lossless compression to transmit over Wifi.
Appreciate this advice, thank you...I use my kindle and spotify to play music via the uniti...please be kind enough to offer advice on how I might continue to operate this way but with the mojo?
Thank you...
Hi Dude,
To really benefit from the Mojo's internal DAC you need to keep the signal path as short and clean as possible (some use DACs with volume control directly into power amps using the volume control of the DAC - not all agree that this is optimal, you would still require a custom cable 3.5 mini jack to XLR - not sure this would make sense long term though). Assuming you are using the 250 with your Uniti, you could introduce the Mojo between your Source (Kindle/smart phone etc) and Uniti via 3.5 mm jack to 5 Pin Din analogue cable into the Uniti. Please refer to your Uniti's product manual as to how to make the connection.
Also, there is a lot of information on this forum on pros and cons of using external DACs into a Naim-based system. This makes for a great read in any case. As for your question about analog to digital conversion, that would be redundant in your configuration at least. There are now TTs that do this for vinyl if you wanted to digitize your analog records library.

The problem with the Unitis is that they are designed primarily to function as one-box players, so you cannot take a digital out from the Uniti streamer to an external DAC like the Mojo, and then feed the Mojo analogue output back into the Uniti preamp. You're not the first person to have this idea, but in the Naim world, you need separates to do it, not all-in one players.

Best advice...
Use an uncompressed source.
By using Spotify you're compromising everything right at the start.
How are you transmitting audio from the Kindle to the Uniti?
Can the Kindle use a Chromecast Audio?

No. if you're using the analogue out of the Kindle you'd then have...
Digital from Spotify > DtoA conversion in the Kindle > Analogue into the ADC > AtoD conversion > Digital into the Mojo > DtoA conversion > Analogue into the Uniti.
Appreciate the advice...after consideration of my needs etc I am going to purchase a Nac 272...
I am sure you will enjoy... just checking that you are aware as the N272 is an all-in-one digital source-preamp that you can't feed an external DAC from the N272 and then feed the signal back into the N272.

If you're going to get any form of streamer, it's well worth investing in a NAS drive and ripping all your CDs to that. The sound quality is just so much better than you'll get with a compressed data feed from Spotify or similar lossy compressed feeds.
Thank you both for your helpful and valuable advice...Enjoy the weekend...
