Android control of Unitiserve

Posted by: DaveB on 03 July 2017

Hi, this is my first post on this site. I have owned my Unitiserve (played via 272 and 250DR) for I think a couple of years now. The main problem I have with it, is control using the Naim app for android devices. There are a few niggles but the most annoying is if I leave the app running, after I have finished listening to a cd, then go back to the app, it does not recognise the server. My laptop sees it still and if I restart the tablet all is back ok. The main reason I went down this route, having previously used a CDX2, was for the convenience of having all my music easily selectable and this detracts somewhat from the enjoyment. I have heard that a software update is due for android but have as yet seen nothing of this. Has anyone experienced anything like this or know of correcting software.

Just another short point, when I selected the link to the site rules in my welcome email I was sent to a page with an error message?!

Thanks in advance

Dave

Sounds like a network discovery issue to me, where the streamer is not seeing the server, so I doubt the control app is to blame here. How is your network set up and configured, there may be something you can do to make it more reliable?

Dave,

re. the link, thanks I'll look into that.  I'll also move this thread over to the Streaming Audio Room.

We need to know the network setup i.e. switch, LAN config, router, etc to be able to help

Hi Richard, the connections are hardwired to router. A TPLink 5way data switch is used. The router has been upgraded to Virgin's Hub3 after discussing this and other issues with my dealer and Phil Harris at Naim. All set up was carried out by the dealer.

I don't use the Android app myself, so can't say whether you should experience that, but it seems a little unlikely. I never have that problem with my 272 and Unitiserve, albeit with a VM Superhub 2ac rather than 3.  Here are a few ideas anyway.

You may find that restarting the app is all you need to do, rather than restarting the tablet each time.

Also it would be worth seeing if you can get a mate with an iPhone or iPad to try the IOS app. If that shows the problem as well, then it's your network.

Another idea I have seen suggested elsewhere is to use your remote control to let the 272 find the Unitiserve and you may find the app then picks it up.

Thanks for that, if I get the chance I'll try an iPod. I have used the remote to select music from the Unitiserve and this works ok but the app still doesn't recognise the Unitiserve. I think resetting the app would solve the problem but this is not a satisfactory outcome as I feel the app should just work

Naim App covers streamers like NDX, N272 etc.

Another app: nServe will cover the UnitiServe.

Perhaps that's the source of 'problems'?

Adam is right. The app won't see you Unitiserve as a unit, but if you go to a streamer like the 272 then you can select music to play from your Unitiserve by selecting upnp and browsing or searching for the music. There isn't an n-serve version for Android, but anyway n-serve is only useful with a 272 if the Unitiserve is connected to the 272 by spdif.

But anyway I think you are controlling the music on the Unitiserve via the 272? The new version of the app does control the Core but not the Unitiserve.
