apple airpods - pretty good

Posted by: analogmusic on 04 July 2017

One of my work colleagues was lucky to buy the apple airpods, I tried them on, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sound and musicality.

I have to say that I have been spoilt by Naim DAC V1 and Chord Hugo sound through headphones, but yet the airpods are quite rhythmic and enjoyable, and well, I think I will be buying a pair when available. A lot less faffing around than connecting my IPhone to Chord Mojo, and then using wired headphones (for casual listening anyway)

This got me thinking, if this is anything of an indication, well the upcoming Homepod apple speaker should be something pretty good, and costs a lot less than a QB.

Anyone else heard the airpods?

No, but I have the Beyerdynamic Byron BT.  Also BT aptX, but with a cord between the earpieces.

As you say in ear phones have got a LOT better recently and are now a perfectly acceptable portable sound solution when playing FLAC files from my phone.

Do these Apple thingies still leak a lot of noise? That's what matters to me - especially in office when I sit between youngsters having already worse hearing than I do.

I couldn't hear any.

I think for office use, it's a pretty good solution.

I will tell my youngster colleagues that they need to have these because they are very cool (if they understand the meaning of 'cool' - it feels like an old word).

I find mine to be disappointing. They are bass-light, a little nasal/shrill, and they handle aircraft noise *very* badly. Not only are they not noise cancelling, but their acoustic design makes a hollow roaring noise from the aircraft noise which is quite offputting,

Undoubtedly very good in some scenarios, but certainly not all.

My daughter likes her AirPods and they do not leak any sound, however she has excellent hearing and so the volume is much lower than I would use. On an aircraft I would not be without my Bose noise cancelling headphones.
