Unitiqute 2 to nap250 rca to xlr cable

Posted by: Jellyheadjeff on 06 July 2017

Quck question. I've got a unitiqute 2 and happen to have a spare nap250 lying around. If I wanted to connect the two to use the nap250 power amp element I believe I need an rca to xlr cable. What wiring is needed for that/any suggestions where available/rough cost etc?

Any view on whether it's worth doing? It's a serviced CB nap250 with some temporary old linn nexus speakers at the end. At some point I will change the speakers to something better but this not my main system.

Regards

Jeff

No doubt you could buy a Naim interconnect but if I were you I would buy a third party lead on eBay. I just looked and there are lots available for less than £30.

Is it worth doing? Yes I think so as you have the NAP250 hanging around. But the UQ2 is not really as good as the 250 deserves, which is another reason to try it out with a good quality but not too pricy interconnect first.

And you may prefer the UQ2 the way Naim made it, without a big power amplifier.

Thanks. I guess my question is are there any specific rca->xlr specific cables I need to specify from whatever source in terms of pin out riquirements? I must admit the world of various burndy/snaic etc cables is not the easiest to comprehend as much as I love Naim overall.

No not really. You could buy a SNAIC but that's quite a lot of money on a punt and I suspect the effect on SQ in this setup will be subtle at most. But you could probably resell a SNAIC if you decided you didn't want it later. If you look on eBay you will see that there are numerous makers at all prices. The pin out of the plugs isn't an issue with this lead I think and even if a maker did get L and R reversed, you could just swap over the RCA plugs.

Jeff - Google 'Flashback cables' - Dave will make you what you need at a good price. No worries about blowing things up as there is no pre-amp power feed from the 250.

Might also be worth googling Witchhat as well, likewise they make custom interconnects and are former Naim bods too. Their N2 speaker cable is rather good as well.

I use my UQ with 250DR driving ATC SCM11s. Works great. Dont listen to this "its not good enough for the 250" huff-n-puff. If you have the amp, its worth plugging in. And the UQ has limited grunt for feeding needy speakers like the SCM11s, so the 250DR is a big improvement on decent level

I don't disagree with your point that it's worth trying  Jon, even though the OP says he has a chrome bumper 250 not a 250DR.

my point is that UQ is fine driving even a mighty 250DR

I use a nap 100 with my Uniqute 2 and have tried my nap 200, both significantly better than the Uniqute on its own. As it happened I marginally preferred the 100 in my setup.

Thanks for opinions folks. I'll look into cable costs then and decide whether to do it or not. I suspect it would improve things but might un-pack it first to see how the different visual styles look together.

Ok I thought you were interested in sound quality. My mistake. I will unfollow this thread now then.

I am interested in sound quality - why else would I be in the naim forums but fair enough. What I was more meaning is if it was better I might look to match it with a same style amp longer term. I just didn't to fork out on a cable with a certain cost to find the gain marginal. What I hearing is that it would be worth doing so I think I'll do it and investigate the lead suggestions.

I agree if it's just sound quality then money becomes less relevant, I too would be interested in the Nova pre amp/streamer front end with a power amp vs n272 and power amp. The n272 is well respected and will take some beating, but future proofing has some value. Can't wait for my demo?
