Portable music players
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 09 July 2017
I'm thinking about getting a portable music player to take on holiday and use in the car (which has a USB socket that integrates with the stereo) or in the garden. It needs to be simple to use, sound good, have decent battery life, be able to play high res files, and be able to have music transferred to it by dragging and dropping from the nas, without the need for any special programmes. I want to be able to charge it from a mains charger, like the one from the iPhone, and not have to rely on a computer - which we don't take when we go camping in our tent! I don't want to spend more than £250, and the two that caught my eye are the Fiio X3 2nd gen, and the Astell & Kern Junior. The latter is reduced a lot, presumably because it's going to be replaced. I have some Sennheiser Momentum on ear headphones that I could use with it. Both seem to be able to take SD cards, so I thought if I got a 200Gb one I'd have plenty of space. Does anyone have any experience of these? I found Bruce's thread from 2015 about the Fiio, but wondered if there is anything more recent, or even better alternatives. Thanks.

I also have a pair of the Sennheiser Momentum in ear and find them very easy to drive with a decent sound quality. I suspect you would need to up the budget considerably to gain any significant improvement.

I had in mind that it may be illegal in UK to drive wearing headphones or ear buds, or if not strictly so, it could be regarded as contributory in the event of an accident. Unwise at least - and that goes for cycling on any public highway (though it is surprising how many cyclists do).
...oh, you mean the other sort of drive!

I'm not sure that there's any blood in or on the Chord devices... (
)
At least the infection didn't happen until after you had found your solution, so didn't risk persuading you to try (perhaps that was the reason for the budget limit?)

Does surprise me as a new Naim recruit how other great dacs such as Totaldac etc are not mentioned there are other dacs apart from Dave or is the Dave the only hi-end dac that works with Naim gear

Well, I'm sure they'll all work with Naim gear, but there seems to be something particular about the presentation of music by Chord DACs from Mojo through Hugo to Dave that just grabs people when they hear it (the phrase "more analogue-like" is a common expression), and it seems that a majority who have heard them prefer them. Whether many have listened to the other non-Naim DACs around I've no idea - I can nly answer for myself, and I haven't.

Indeed! I wouldn't dream of wearing headphones of any kind whilst driving.

At least the Melco hasn't been mentioned, but actually....
As to your final choice, personally I wouldn't have purchased a portable player that wasn't capable of running Roon.

Erm...I've just bought a Chord Mojo and it's presently plugged into my Melco. ![]()

I wondered when someone would mention Roon.
So is this thread now complete? (Aside from HH's need for more earbud recommendations? I believe Focal make some...)
Nigel, have you consider on ear headphones at all? I take a pair of Sony ear buds away with me, probably similar in capability to yours and a pair of B&W P3's.
The P3's are good value and often available direct from B&W in their refurbished store. They sound nice and you don't look too much of a knob wearing them. I find wearing a pair of shorts manages this very well!
I tend to use the B&W indoors and the others when out and about.
Just a thought

absolutely agree: the chord mojo or hugo is present in all topics! please stop this chord virus!!
Agreed! Let's go back to 272/250DR, long forgotten and neglected.
And from now on its forbidden to listen a-a-tonal music, since it has 'chords'.

Rules out a lot of guitar, piano, and organ music

From the silence in certain quarters, I take Tellurium Q doesn't make any headphone cables... "Just like another black box"... ![]()

But not my guitar playing (or singing).............
Anyway back on topic - How's the AK70 settling in Nigel ?. Any decisions on the 'phones yet ?

Well, I doubt you can sing in chords(?).

Luckily, you've not heard me sing! More cracked notes than Miles Davis having a bad day and a sore lip.
Getting back to HH's request for recommended in-ear headphones, I use 1More Triple Drivers with my AK70. I bought them on the strength of several reviews and, currently priced at just over £80 on Amazon, they are a real bargain. Another quality product that sounds great. There are also 1More Quad Drivers at more than double the price. Not sure if they are worth the extra.
Thanks for the in-ear suggestions. I'll take a look at the Focal and 1More suggestions. I've been trying my Sennheiser Momentum headphones and they are pretty underwhelming - the sound from my £30 in ears is better. I've been thinking about getting some phones to use with the Naim and want something better than the Momentums, so I've ordered some BeyerDynamic AKT5p, which are closed so will be good when out and about, and have a balanced option for the AK70. They are well reviewed and well built, so should be OK.
I need to sort out the right sequence for mounting the SD card, rather than just taking it out, and I'm hoping I'm ok charging it from the USB socket in our MK wall socket, but other than these logistics I think it's great. I'm sure I'll hear what it's really capable of once the new headphones arrive.
I've discovered that it has a DLNA streaming renderer built in that can stream for the Qnap, which is a nice surprise and means I can listen to all my music in the garden, though the wifi doesn't seem quite string enough to avoid dropouts. It's something to think about anyway.

The DNLA thing on mobile players is indeed a nice feature, however it very often doesn't work so well due to the fact that one tends to be further away from the wifi signal...
In-ears: I use RHA MA750i, quite good. Since I travel a lot the build quality is important and they are great from that perspective.
My personal favourites at the moment are the Audiofly AF180's however, their cables hook over the ear so wouldn't suit HH's brief. Great easy listening sound though!

Good stuff Nigel- glad you're getting on well with it. If you do find the DLNA feature useful when out in the garden then you could always consider adding a wireless extender to give you coverage over the garden (I'm not sure what Router you use - the usual suspects can offer network extension advice here). We do this and it's extended the useful range of our wireless signal quite nicely.
