Crazy Album Pricing

Posted by: Mike-B on 10 July 2017

An overseas friend of mine asked me to buy him a vinyl copy of The Stone's 'Blue & Lonesome' for when I go out next week.   My first call was the big river,   Wa'  !!!!  what is going on,    £60 !!!   they cannot be serious,  then £40 for the CD,  what madness is this.

Looking around the different mediums & vendors the price spread is all over the place.

Vinyl:      Amazon £60.08    HMV  £26.99

CD:        Amazon  £40.75 for SHM-CD version & £5.00 for 'regular' CD         HMV  £5.99

24-bit/88.2kHz:             HDTracks £26.00     7digital £21.99    Qobuz £18.88    HighResAudio £14.00

More crazy, those Amazon prices are for Prime members. Otherwise you can buy from Amazon marketplace, where the CD (new) is as cheap as £3.92 incl delivery, and SHMCD for £22.84.

Clearly retail ptices are not rigged!

OK I see that now,  I don't go paddling in the river much these days, I gave up on vinyl & CD's a while back.    That said I'm always surprised by the price spread across the dowload marketplace,  but being most familiar with that I know where to go for the best deals.

I paid £3 for the CD in Fopp last Saturday in their Cambridge store. Bargain.

They don't have an online store, but there may be shop near you?

You can't beat Fopp. Making a trip to London on Thursday to do my usual trawl around the Cambridge Circus shop. Halcyon days when they had a massive store on Tottenham Court Road.

Re. Various pricing wouldn't you like to see these guys in The Apprentice and hear Sir Alan say 'Now just talk me through your pricing policy ......and you River....'

Are the prices cheaper in Brazil, (shorter distance, so lower transport costs)?

Alternatively this is the crazy world of HiFi, so if you pay more it must sound better...

Therefore the vinyl from Amazon will 'sound better' than the vinyl from HMV, and the download from HDTracs will 'sound better' than the identical file from HighResAudio.
On this basis, you might also find the MP3 from Amazon 'sounds better' than the CD from Amazon Marketplace, and it could even possible be 'better' than the regular CD form Amazon, but I haven't checked the prices.

Mike - I think the devil is in the detail re the pricing differential and the import duties? I notice the river's vinyl is RCA label & imported whereas the HMV is Polydor (assume UK pressed - perhaps German?), and this is where the Marketplace comparisons can also fog the issue about which version is on offer. AFAICS, the £22.84 for the SHMCD is ex-import costs?

On a lot of new content I often buy the cheapest CD/vinyl version (often via Marketplace) and then (within reason) go for the definitive and better quality version if I really like it. Making a 'mistake' or just getting a poorer quality version/pressing given the escalating price of vinyl and some CD's, is no fun.
