From NaimUniti to Nac 272 & Nap 250 Upgrade...First Impressions...

Posted by: The Dude on 14 July 2017

...I write this 'review'  to share my experience and hopefully help others considering upgrade options...

Like many here my hifi journey included endlessly chopping and changing separates, interconnects etc...searching for a harmonious and satisfying system...quite enjoyed this journey actually however it was ultimately frustrating and led me to seek out a simple solution capable of providing decent  sounds sans boxes and multicolour leads littering the lounge!

I purchased a Uniti, my first acquaintance with Naim...I had been  bitten.

The first upgrade after a couple of years was a new board and my first experience of  Naims fantastic customer service;second upgrade was the acquisition of an ex Naim employees recased Olive 250;which provided the sound with some weight and added detail...lovely job for a year or so until realising that I no longer used the fine CD player relying upon Spotfiy for my musical provisions...

So whilst in Provence for the month of June the 250 was dispatched to Naim for a service, once again their support and service was exemplary...

During my break I toyed with the idea of my next upgrade (streamer) so purchased a Chord Mojo but some kind and helpful souls on here advised me that attempts at Dac experimentation wouldn't work with the Uniti; the Mojo now lives in the car (BMW 6 series with a decent 10 speaker system) connected to my phone and stereo providing excellent sound...

So following many positive reviews and personal experiences on here I purchased a Nac272 which I connected to my 250 , and Spendor A6s and Naca 5  today...Goodness me! What a substantial and positive upgrade, even my wife, previously unable to hear and improvements when I tweaked commented positively on the improvement to sound quality; saying how much clearer and cleaner the music was! The step up from the Uniti is enormous, there is bass weight I had never experienced before, clarity and insight leading to previously well known tracks sounding completely different, so much more detail to the instruments and their timbre , the soundstage has expanded exponentially, voices show their subtly and character like never before, there is a cleanliness to the sound and quite surprisingly the PRAT is suddenly no longer hiding timidly!

Obviously I was hoping to find an improvement however I wasn't prepared for it to have been so obvious and unequivocal...I also know that I shall be a devoted Naim customer because quite honestly why would I ever buy anything else? Their equipment is just so bloody good...

No argument here.  I went from a Uniti2 to 272 + 250 DR myself (the 272 really comes to life with an XPS DR power supply but is outstanding on its own), with a couple of detours (Nait XS, NAP 200) on the way.  I've been kicking around hifi since the 1970s and Naim is my endpoint.  Congrats on the new system, and enjoy!

Mr Dude,

Welcome to the growing club of 272&250 owners! have very similar experiences with this combination, see https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...59#48028104783271059

Next step for you would be to upgrade to the 250DR ?

Well done Dude! If you are in audio nirvana just enjoy and go along for the ride. There is no need to do anything else.

Nice one The Dude. I started with a Uniti2 and progressed with Naim separates although in a different way to you. Now just enjoy the music.

A word of warning however. You mention you have been bitten by the Naim bug and you have probably one of the best VFM Naim systems going at present. Watch out for signs of upgraditis as you will need to spend considerably more to get a worthwhile improvement on your current set up.

Have fun and stay away from the HiFi Corner!

Thank you to everyone for their contribution and for the link which provided a vindication for my findings...

I shall live with this system, only contemplating an upgraded PS should either upgraditis or the desire for a sound improvement strike!

This combination is really quite remarkable...intend to sell the Uniti on the ubiquitous online auction site now...

Enjoy your weekend.

...just remembered that a Nap 155x  preceded the 250!

I too have got a Uniti2 and posts like this do nothing to sooth away my upgraditis.  My question would be is it worth doing the upgrades in parts.  Add a 250dr now and get a n-272 when funds become available, or just wait and do the lot in a 'big bang' upgrade later?

Best thing is to audition if you can to see whether the 272/250 combination is for you. If so then move to it in whatever suits your budget. I added a 250 to my SU before getting the 272.

Have you thought about a used non dr 200 - always available and reasonably priced - i've recently switched from Cyrus to a 272 and used 200 and am very happy with the sound.

SuperUniti -> SuperUniti + 200DR -> 272 + 200DR = Very, very good! With PMC 20.23's.

And yes, I do know I'm not using the DR in the 200 and a used 200 would be just as good.....

I have auditioned the 272/250DR, and yes it is better, so recommend trying both and getting what suits your ear and/or budget, but the 272 is sure to please.
