melco n1a/2 - wav metadata query and songkong/minimserver query

Posted by: Matthew Johns on 15 July 2017

hi all,

struggling to get the twonky 7 upnp server on my melco n1a/2 to recognise wav files, doesn't display album art or recognise the artist for my radiohead moon shaped pool album

was after any tips to help resolve ??

also aware that can install minimserver and was wondering how people managed and found using this instead of twonky 7

and finally has anyone used songknog and did this help with tagging wav or other music file metadata?

appreciate any feedback on my myriad of questions

Twonky is a pile of crap. Use Minim, which is excellent.

i found a discussion for melco with twonky or minim server on devialet chat: tap google and melco minimserver:  minimserver seems to be preferred...and people have difficulties with twonky...

I'm not sure why your Melco's inbuilt twonky's having trouble recognising WAV files, it did seem to work fine on mine, so not much help on that score (I'm assuming you're using the latest Melco firmware). But Minimserver is a better bet altogether and works very well indeed.

hi guys thanks for responses ran minim previously with no issues, looks like will be installing that on the melco

keler am using the NDAC with XPS DR and NDX as transport recently picked up the 2014 NDAC for very very good price pre-loved and in process of burning in my new bnc-bnc cable but very happy with it so far has a lovely detailed sound that thumps along with much better base control than the NDX had

hi tony, yep got latest firmware dont know why it doesn't like that album

how easy was it to install minim server on the melco and can you set it, so it scans/updates its library automatically (though this was only down side and was reason i moved to asset upnp on my old nas)

cheers,

The Melco is a UPnP server or a USB source so you'll need either a UPnP streamer (NDX in this case) or USB to S/PDIF converter to interface to the Naim DAC.

but with melco and dac in usb, or spdif, you can stream from local on the melco or from tidal...just melco and dac.

Yes  - but the Naim DAC doesn't have a USB input that is compatible with a computer type source so you'll need something to convert to S/PDIF.

The NDX is a UPnP renderer - the Melco is acting as a UPnP server. Connection between the Naim DAC and the NDX is via S/PDIF.

Back to the original question - I have tested WAV files with Twonky on a Melco and have not managed to get it to recognise the Album artist tag. Imported albums do not show under the artist but they are listed in the album view. SongKong doesn't make any difference to this. It would be very helpful if Twonky is able to extract artist or better still album artist from WAV files.

Minimserver works perfectly.

I was interested in comparing Twonky and Minimserver via USB output into a DAC. This is the route I'm heading and wanted to get the best possible sound quality.

Quick update installed minim server on the melco, was pretty easy you just follow the steps on the minim server home page with a usb stick

once installed worked straight away and recognised the wav files straight away, so all is good again

A quick update, for Wav files Twonky only recognises the metadata added via the basic Wav Info tag rather than the much more comprehensive Wav ID3 tag, SongKong adds both.  Wav Info doesn't support artwork, for artwork to be recognized it has to be written to a separate folder.jpg file in the same folder. SongKong can do this easily but it is not done by default , full details at http://blog.jthink.net/2017/08...p-with-songkong.html

But the best solution is to use MinimServer, we have a set of articles about configuring SongKong with MinimServer at http://www.jthink.net/songkongformelco/upnp.jsp

(BTW I am SongKong developer but its not showing my signature on post)

Sorry, i missed this thread first time aired.

Using NDX as a usb-spdif converter seems to be a waste of the NDX. Better would be to swap it for a device designed for that job (e.g. GUstard U12, tested by Richard DAne in that mode last year, and only costing a little over £100), or swap both NDX and nDAC for a different DAC with usb input (DAC v1, Chord etc).
