Naim app update. Is it just me

Posted by: steven2907 on 15 July 2017

Since the update I'm having real problems with the app connecting to my 272... the app just searches for rooms eventhough I've always used the app so it was all set up, so both iPad and iPhone 7 continue searching,

Ive deleted the app and reinstalled it many times and also manually entered the IP address and name only for it to work until I close the app, then it just searches rooms again,  I've rebooted my bt hub 6 and it's still the same, I've also restarted my 272....

When the app asks me to set up a new product it just shows the new uniti range

am I the only one with these problems?

If a 272 is considered a legacy product then we are in trouble:-).

I hate to be the one to tell you but the streaming architecture in the 272 IS LEGACY.

Doesn't mean it can't sound great but it is yesterday papers, what will be interesting is to see if a 272.2 comes out with a "uniti" type architecture.

i actually think it may prove to be an error to try and have both old and new Naim streaming platforms/ architectures using the same app. I think it's quite likely to hold back some functionality in the new platform and end up not being as stable as a previous incarnation for "legacy" products.

Hang on, you're jumping the gun here. It will  be a legacy product when a new streaming platform is released, but that hasn't actually happened yet!

Many months ago I suggested that 1st September might be a good date to return to my Core. Looks like I will be about right.

ok, lets be kind: 272, ndx, nds are "about to be legacy products". Surely thats obvious to anyone with half a brain? Uniti is the new digital platform for Naim. Naim cant invest that much and not push it up through the ranges as quickly as possible.

Digital is something that works from the bottom up, not top down (like, to an extent, analogue does). Naim has no control over wire protocols *at all*. certification to 3rd parties is king, as the last N months have demonstrated so painfully.

Regardless, there is still no excuse for not making sure the App functions correctly with existing products.

Mind you, i have just updated my Sky Q App

Hi Guys,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble. The test team have a really comprehensive regression test plan that spans a very large number of our products both new and old. We know how long our products last and there take back compatibility seriously.

I'll talk to the guys tomorrow to check we have covered your device / product combinations.

Apologies if this has got in the way of the music

You can't roll back in Apple world. Only Naim could do that (if they wanted to).

You can just choose not to download and install 5.7. I forget whether you have to tell IOS not to install app updates automatically, but I rather think you do have to do that in IOS settings somewhere.

You can "roll back" on iPhone assuming you sync with iTunes and do incremental backups using time machine.

Ah well, that's beyond me and I suspect relatively few people bother with iTunes backups as a matter of routine.

This might explain why I was having a bit of trouble with my new Core,I also have a 272.Yesterday and today I could not get the Core to play what I selected on the app,it showed up and everything on the screen, but when I hit play nothing happened. But I can get it to play the track with the remote.I just put it down to it being new to me,and I was not doing something right,it seemed to work fine on Saturday from the app.I have been busy ripping all my CD's to the Core,so have just been concentrating on that really.

the app is more important than the pre-amp today so if there are issues it does interfere with the music.  I initial used a samsung tablet and got fed up with glitches.  I have a ipad  now and sometimes have problems.    ive got a second system using using an aries mini using the lightening app. it hasn't put a foot wrong in the last 2 months.   iam sure the new range will be good, but the control should be be perfect

I get this occasionally, like yesterday for example, with the 5.6 IOS app and my Core. But what I have found is that if you navigate back in the app to the point where you can select the Core as the server then navigate back to the album you want to play, it all works properly when you add tracks to the play queue. I suspect this bug is Core firmware related and not down to the app.

Hi Tom,

For your info if you intend to look at this 'bug' my system is N272 fed by a unitiserve, no other Naim devices networked, connected via CAT 5e in wall, to a commercial  Cisco switch and Cisco WAPs. The network is VERY robust.

When starting the Naim app it now ALWAYS goes to 'finding rooms', for anything between 5 seconds and 2 minutes, after which I can select my N272. The app then performs normally but is slower that before the update. There is also 'lag' when using the volume or balance controls on occasion. Previously the app opened straight to the N272 source selection (home) screen and was fast, i.e. controls worked without lag.

Thanks for looking at this and hope to hear from you soon.

from earlier in the thread  - perhaps the regression testing and test result analysis slipped up here?

I have also been experiencing the issues above with the app not finding my 272.  I had wondered if it was in part due to the fact that I have several TP-Link powerline wifi extenders in the house and the iPhone was selecting a different one than the 272.  The 272 is close to the router and picking up that wifi signal, so I resort to standing next to the 272, switching of the wifi on the phone, turning it back on so it selects the router signal and then reopen the app and all works fine.  Or failing that I dig out an Android device and use that as it is far more stable.

Posted on: 18 July 2017 by DomTomLondon

Same here. the App is very flakey for me. I have been using an Android phone for the past 2 weeks, as my iPhone finally gave up, and have been blaming the issue on Android OS. Seems that is not the case, and the new update is just not release ready.

With the new Uniti range fiasco and now issues with Apps. I'm wondering whether going all Streaming with Naim has been the right choice. Should have just stuck with my old CD player.

Posted on: 18 July 2017 by JSH

Hopeless, Naim.  On my Qute2 , my UPnP is working fine in both the new ("improved") Naim app and with Bubble.  But the radio drops out evry 30 seconds or so; goodbye tonight's Prom with the buffer (I nearly mistyped there) falling from 100 to 30..  Last night before this "upgrade" everything was working perfectly

As others have found, it has to try to find he room each time it connects and gives it a new name (ISP) and not the old device name, and will not accept a rename in settings.

Poor stuff

As long as it doesn't have any negative impact on streaming SQ, or does it?

Thanks to the OP for raising this, I unwittingly updated the app the evening before I dismantled my hard wired network. Then to my horror my system seemed to take an age to find rooms on reconnection and stopped and started during playback before settling down. I wondered what had happened!

Posted on: 18 July 2017 by PBenny1066

Hopeless for me too. Made the mistake of "upgrading" to 5.7.1 on both my iPhone 6 and iPad 2 both running latest version of iOS.

App  is now virtually unnavigable now, using upnp.

When I add new music from upnp, no longer an option to play this track or play from this track onwards etc . , it simply dumps the whole album into the queue.  Also no navigation bar at the bottom of the iPhone screen, even when playing upnp the bottom bar is locked in Tidal.

Absolutely dreadful.

Judt realised that I've broken one of my golden rules here. Never set all of your devices to auto update.

Naim , please get a grip....

Posted on: 18 July 2017 by David O'Higgins

If I wasn't using Roon, I would probably have murdered the dog by now, out of sheer frustration. The app occasionally finds my MuSo, but hardly ever my NDS. Restarting routers, streamers etc. is no proper solution. This thing should just work!

For me, restarting the router requires major intra-family diplomacy, which completely removes the spontaneity which should be associated with listening to music.

Ah yes mine does this too, nicely described pbenny

Updated to 5.7.1 today (automatic updates on iPhone).

Why do I have to go through the finding rooms, select NDX hassle every single time I open the app? I only have one Naim device.

Posted on: 18 July 2017 by No quarter

Maybe I made a mistake updating the Core on Saturday, when it said "update available".I wonder if this problem is only in UPNP,I have not tried streaming via the SPDIF of the Core yet,or is this strictly an app problem? As I said yesterday,I have been concentrating on ripping all my CD's right now,and playing them with the remote.

Posted on: 18 July 2017 by TJ

@bpenny, I think you need to enable "tap for options", this is in settings > Other settings. Tap the question mark at the top of the settings menu for an explanation of what this setting is for

RE having to select your product on each app launch. I can only reproduce this by forcibly quitting the app and relaunching it but when the app goes to the background state then back again it automatically reconnects as expected. Sometimes if you have lots of other apps running iOS can force close an app that has been backgrounded. If you close down other running apps does the reconnection problem go away?
