Why put speaker cables on foam?
Posted by: Consciousmess on 16 July 2017
Hi all,
This question must be asked as it's an ultra cheap upgrade and I've seen it in many demonstration systems. Having recently realised the benefit of using 2x 6m of cable and my system far from speakers, I've learned that is the optimal method.
So why do demonstration systems still do this as presumably the promoters already have optimised cable length.
6m is enough distance for fibration issues. But that's my hypothesis I welcome being challenged.
Merci!

Forget pipe foam, unless it's a rare Brazilian hardwood, hand crafted and polished on the thighs of virgin beauties, it's nothing...

What a very pleasant thought Dave !
I wish I had your imagination for product design, you're obviously the kind of chap that Naim should be signing up to their development team.
Am I loosing out here - I've buried my cables in the concrete in the floor; can I make up for it by putting my speakers on foam instead ?

Tricky problem to solve, I would suggest you need a numatic drill to release your cables from the concrete, any small pieces break up with a sledge hammer.....once cables are released then rest them carefully on foam......

I don't think you're seeing the bigger picture here, surely the right answer is to leave the cables in concrete, but get structurl engineers to gently raise your house from the foundations and insert a layer of foam, thus decoupling everything in one fell swoop, and also being very useful in earthquakes.

You need one of these a JCB Cable Extraction Device

On reflection, maybe a small stick of dynamite, save on hire costs...

Fool. What you should have done is dig a trench, fill it with water and then float your cables on chunks of polystyrene.
I think I might be onto something here.

Umm.....cables and water.....strong possibility of experiencing some form of inky blackness ...

Without meaning to be indelicate, I think you need a pee.

Well spotted...
I choose a mix of Wool and Man made fibre about 2.5 cm deep that sits on a hessian backed foam, this is sooooo good I decided to cover my whole floor with it.

Possibly no need to damp the room either once the trenches are in.

Different songs, both by Ted Dicks & sung by Bernard Cribbins (personally I find 'Hole in the Ground' much funnier).
Both songs need to be poured into concrete...best place for them...
